January 2024 - we miss Coffee Don. We are dreaming of the coffee and the strawberry parfait 😄👍 December 2023 - Full of character and charm. Easy listening jazz. Even the silverware and cutlery harken to an earlier time. Serving no-nonsense coffee, Colombian and Blue Mountain, not machine made but hand-brewed. Strong and flavourful. No sourness, just enough bitter to balance the cream - it's coffee to warm the belly and make you smile. Good sandwiches and toast, made to order. The pizza toast is a great snack at anytime. The homemade apple pie, cream puff and cheesecake are also good. The doughnuts, are light, tender and really tasty. The strawberry parfait, is serious old-school, so good - excellent; lots of sweet strawberries, the cream, so fresh - great value. Sure, the counter could be a little neater - but my family and I had great times in Coffee Don. We visited every day we were in Takayama. Pretty soon, we were joining the regulars at 10am. Lovely people, great service. Coffee Don looks, feels and smells - like a coffee cafe should.

After our morning visit to the outdoor Market, we came to coffee Don for our breakfast. This is an interesting shop with nice nostalgic feeling. It's been around since 1951, according to the owner. Coffee Don is an old style Coffee shop. Decor is back to the 80s style. A small little eatery that serves mainly light food like sandwiches and drinks. Located along the shopping street of Takayama, its not difficult to locate. We tried the Open Sandwich and toast set. Both were great, toast was a bit plain though... Ambience was full marks for me...the nostalgic style with slow jazz music in the background. Price,..not the cheapest sandwiches but for the experience, it was alright. Service was not too bad. They were efficient and approachable and tried comm in Eng with foriegners. But I must add seats were quite uncomfortable so don't expect to be sitting around for a long time. Space is also rather crammy... By 10am, almost all of the seats were occupied. So come early.

The irony is, if a cafe doesn't display an open sign, it's challenging to determine if it's open, especially when the windows are tinted and the blinds are drawn. I peeked inside and noticed illuminated lamps, so I decided to enter. The cafe had a cozy atmosphere with classical music playing. We were welcomed by an elderly gentleman who took our orders, and another lady joined him to serve juices, toast, eggs, and hot beverages. While I wasn't a fan of butter back in Singapore, I've grown to love butter toast here in Japan! It has a delightful fragrance, and they use simple, thick white bread. Perhaps it's the way they toast it—crispy on the edges and soft inside! The butter quickly melted onto the toast, creating a buttery and incredibly delicious taste! They provide English menus on certain tables; you can request one if you're seated at a table with a Japanese menu. Additionally, they have the WiFi details displayed on the counter table, and they only accept cash payments.

Seriously, we couldn't have come across a nicer coffee shop than Don. For starters, the coffee is fantastic. My wife had a café au lait that she thoroughly enjoyed, and my "strong" coffee was indeed strong, and tasty. My daughter had a strawberry milkshake that was absolutely delicious. The food was also on point. I had a simple cream cheese toast - the toast itself was super thick and served with a bit of honey to top it off. My wife's chocolate cake was rich and complimented her coffee perfectly. Finally, the service was so friendly, and they didn't rush us out even though they were busy from the semi-annual festival. We enjoyed everything so much we came back the next day and were equally impressed. Recommend the cream puffs like so many others. Prices are very reasonable, and the owners are great. I can't say enough good things about this coffee shop!

It's stylish, relaxing, retro, classy. When's the last time you sip coffee in a tailored white-cloth covered sofa listening to Tony Bennett? Homemade cheese cake. Silver plated sugar container. Glass- top tables at 3 corners while one long bar lines one side and yes, the bar stools are covered too. Time stood still in this little establishment. Everything is spotlessly clean. Attentive service. Plenty of hand-made snacks to choose from, even a couple soups. Do I even need to mention that their coffee is delicious? Located just west of Old Town on the other side of Miyayawa River. Perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or simply just being there.

A hidden gem! This small, family-run café exudes warmth and authenticity. From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed like an old friend. Every detail—from the decor to the presentation of the dishes—reflects a genuine love for what they do and a deep care for their customers. The flavors are simply outstanding, with homemade dishes that feel like they come straight from family recipes. Whether you’re stopping in for coffee, dessert, or a full meal, it’s the perfect spot for a cozy, delicious break. Thank you to this wonderful family for a truly memorable experience! Can’t wait to come back!
