Totally worth the wait to eat here. The quality of the beef they sell here is so good. We came here twice during our stay in Takayama. So this place serve the beef in 3 diff ways and they also have some ala carte stuff which we didn't get to try. What we tried were the 3 main thing 1. The barbecue 2. Shabu shabu 3. Sukiyaki My verdict is that all 3 are so good in their own way. So what's the difference between sukiyaki and shabu shabu. Sukiyaki comes with very concentrated soy sauce based broth which you first lightly grill the beef and then dip into the broth, followed by raw egg. Shabu shabu is just water which you dip your beef and eat it with few types of sauces. I would recommend going for the barbecue and sukiyaki but if you are not feeling that well or down with a sore throat, the shabu shabu is the perfect choice. That's what happened to us actually. So I hope this helps. What made the sukiyaki and shabu shabu so good is really cause the quality of their marbling is so high that you don't even need to order the A5 to enjoy it. We initially ordered premium A5, then the standard A5 but both of them were too much marbling in our opinion. We then opted for the standard beef without A5 (still wagyu) and they were perfect. One thing to note, I feel that their standard beef is comparable to the A5 wagyu marketed back in my own country.

We spent a night in Takayama so we had chances to dine there once at lunchtime and once at dinner time. It worths it despite the lengthy waiting list! (We went to another Hida beef restaurant and we then realise why this particular one is so popular among locals and visitors!!!) The hida beef is superb and no wonder it’s one of the best if not the best wagyu! My favourite is grilled/ barbecued style while my hubby loves sukiyaki style. Both are delicious. (The one with miso on a piece of dried leaf is way too salty to my liking even though that’s a signature dish in that area) My thoughts on: 1. the wait/ queue Jot your name on a sheet and peek at the current almost-being-seated sheet behind that to know how many tables are ahead of yours! then you can choose to either explore nearby places or chill at your hotel before returning to the waiting area of the restaurants. 2. services I’ve read a review about poor service/ attitude. My belief about this is: you get what you deserve; no offence. The waitresses are extremely busy yet they are patient and the smiled back at me when I smile at them. Well, the place is really popular and they have to work so hard all day every day except day off. I hope they are well paid.

I visited alone for 2 consecutive weekdays for dinner. For both nights, I ordered Mixed Grilled Meat (飛騨牛ミックス焼肉) (¥3,800) and rice (regular ¥200, large ¥250). In my opinion, their regular Hida beef is already of very high quality and gets you a better bang for the buck than the A5 Hida beef (nearly doubled at ¥6,800). There are 25 pieces in the Mixed Grilled Meat. Around 5 of which have big chuck of fat, but the rest have very good marbling. I recommend grilling each side for 35 to 40 seconds, and also order rice to help cut the fattiness. This place is a great choice for solo travelers, and it is always filled with tourists, so they seem quite catering to foreigners. I see other reviews saying that the place is unfriendly to foreigners, but from my observation in 2 nights for around an hour each, some behavior of certain tourists can be come across as rude (e.g. waving or shouting "Hey" at the waitstaff instead of using the call bell, and forcing the waitstaff to communicate in English only). As a highly popular Hida beef restaurant, one would want to visit early (no queue yet on a weekday 6pm). Some reviews on Tabelog mentioned waiting for 1 hour on their busy days.

We ordered the Hida beef A5 big plate for 3-4 people (7,880 yen), Japanese wagyu outside skirt (1,580 yen), and the Hida beef stone heated bibimbap (1,380 yen). The A5 beef was an absolute delight to savor the tender and succulent meat that practically melted in my mouth upon the first bite. The marbling of the beef was exceptional, with beautiful distribution of fat throughout. Our final bill for four people amounted to 14,000 yen. Considering the quality and quantity of the dishes we enjoyed, it was an absolute steal, simply a great value for money!! Yet it’s worth noting that we arrived at the restaurant at 5 PM and were seated at 6 PM. They had a limited seating capacity so they stopped taking registration on the waiting list at 5:30pm. I would highly recommend arriving early to secure your spot. Alternatively, you can write down your name on the waiting list at the reception and return later (but god knows when you should return 🤷🏻♀️), ensuring your place at this popular resto. Side story: I must mention the pitcher of Asahi beer (2,100 yen)we ordered - it was impressively huge lol😂😂

This is a great Yakiniku / Sukiyaki restaurant to try Hida beef. It’s attached to a butcher shop next door, so the beef is fresh and high quality. Worth paying a little more to try the A5 (it melts in your mouth!), but even the normal Hida beef is great. This place seems popular with local Japanese and tourists alike. Try to come early or late, otherwise expect a 20-60 minute wait. Note the check-in process; it’s extremely simple (sooo simpoh): 1) Write down your name and the number of people in your party; then 2) Wait until your name is called That’s it! Saw a parade of tourists who simply did not get it. No, you can’t specify the time you want to eat. No, they won’t call or sms you. No, they can’t predict when you’ll be called. No, they won’t suddenly understand you if you raise your voice or speak in a slowwwww exxxaaagerratteddd fashion. If the hostess is away, ring the bell. Saw some one-star reviews that mentioned rude service and being unfriendly to tourists. The place is filled with tourists so this really couldn’t be further from the truth. Be kind!
