EVILTEX Hamburgers & Tex-Mex — Restaurant in Takayama

Unwelcoming, rude a$$es who don’t deserve to be in the food/service industry by the way they acted.

I called 1.5 hours before closing (8:30pm) to confirm when they will close (website says 10:00pm). They put me on hold, then told me last order is in half an hour (9:00pm). I show up around 8:40ish- upon entering the restaurant (strangely shocked to see us), we are met with a woman who abruptly and rudely tells us, “we can’t make burgers now”. I wasn’t even thinking about burgers, but okay…I ask her about the tacos, but then she aggressively limits my choices and tells us we can only order pork or chicken with quite an unwelcoming demeanor. I honestly don’t really know what’s completely on their menu, but I am already told what I can have or cannot have. Lol. Genuinely not happy to see your potential customers is not a good sign. Me and wifey chat for a bit and realize we are not wanted. We tell the staff “daijobu desu”. And this is the first time their voices sounded happy and polite.

You didn’t want to cook anymore and were ready to go home, even though your hours are open. It was obvious you cleaned up and didn’t want to cook/serve anymore for the night.

If that was the case, you could have just told me on the phone or simply closed earlier.

Be true to your business and guests. If you don’t want to be open, close. In this pandemic, you’ll probably get your wish. I hope you go under because once again- you don’t deserve to be...

Atmosphere and staff were extremely welcoming. Definitely America-core at its best. Lots of tasty looking options but there was one that really stood out and it was the 100% Hida Beef Burger. This was really advertised with its own flyer with cool artwork and taunted me by saying “only 10 made a day”. This was also one of their more expensive burgers and didn’t come with fries, which I had to order separately making this burger, fry, and drink about 20+ USD. Better be good. My disappointment when I get what looks like a very well constructed burger, but with virtually no flavor profile. A Plain Jane burger that apparently has 100% Hida beef, and tastes 100% NO DIFFERENT than any old forgetful burger. Save your money and order something else. My wife ordered the classic “grilled cheese” and they should rename this to the “grilled onion”. The menu we received didn’t mention any onions, but somehow the menu the waitress used did say onion when she came by to ask why my wife hadn’t taken a single bite. I ended up eating the grilled cheese; the onions were grilled but not thoroughly caramelized, so still had crunch in them. There was 3 times as much onion than cheese, way too much onion. After almost 2 weeks in Japan, we were looking for something different while in Takayama and we found this spot very close to our hotel. It's a small place, they won't take parties of more than 5 people (they might, if you are willing to split your party, but I can't confirm that). We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to open up, but the staff was quite polite and the food was definitely worth the wait! We ordered the following: Hida Beef Burger Set (came with a soft drink), the EVILTEX Burger with cheese, (came with fries, and 1 other small side), Beef Tacos (came as 3, with choice of flour or corn tortillas), Cheese Quesadilla (they ran out of chicken by the time we got there), Cheese Nachos, and for drinks, one Frozen Margarita and 3 Pepsi. Everyone was quite happy with their meal. The tacos were a massive portion, and the beef was seasoned very nicely with an authentic Tex-Mex flavor. And the burgers were both spectacular. Personally, I'd recommend spending a bit more for the Hida Beef burger, I noticed a significant difference in flavor, but you won't go wrong with any burger they have. In summary, if you're looking for a change of pace and happen to be in Hida Takayama - I highly recommend EVILTEX!! Be prepared to wait a little, but the staff is amazing and very quick...
