Oh what a joy what a joy! My wife and I are really happy to have found this place. It was pouring rain when we got into Takayama but after finding this insanely cool spot, we had to try to get in... and luckily we did! Yu, the bartender/owner and his right-hand man Tanaka, were super cool. They've got a really tasty menu and I would recommend Yu's Penicillin - it's strong and smoky up front but complex as the ice dilutes - one of the best cocktails I've ever had. The other drink I got was Pepe w/Basil, also really tasty as well. My wife got the Sake Caipirinha and boy did she love it... as did I... I kept sneaking in some sips. The bar itself has a lot of personality just like it's two stewards. Get in early because they turn people away once the place is full. I watched it happen two nights in a row as I came back the next night (wife was sick). Tanaka called out that night, but Yu was handling business. He let me sit right in front and even offered some complimentary sake because of the "wait"... but that's how cool this place was, I didn't mind waiting at all. If you find yourself in Takayama, come here. Hang out and have some really well crafted cocktails. Thank you Yu and Tanaka for making Takayama so memorable!!! I also heard many others say that the Yuzu Whiskey Sour was delicious. Try one for me!

Yu, a Japanese Pub in Takayama, is hands down the best bar I have ever visited. The craft cocktails and sake here are nothing short of extraordinary. The mixologist at Yu possesses remarkable skill, crafting drinks that are as tasty as they are visually stunning. I started my evening with a smoked Old Fashioned that had a hint of spice. It was incredibly smooth and tasty, with a comfortable aroma that was both sophisticated and delightful. My friends and I also enjoyed a Penicillin, a whisky sour, and a sake Caipirinha. Each cocktail was a testament to the mixologist’s talent, showcasing flavorful and well-balanced creations. We were also treated to some excellent, locally produced sake, which was a real highlight of the night. The bar’s decor is comfortable and rustic, perfectly echoing a cool Japanese flair. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance, being intimate yet fun and social. Yu is a must-visit when in Takayama. I highly recommend stopping by for a drink or two—you won’t be disappointed! 📸 I post quiet corners and cultural highlights like this one on Instagram: @postcardsandcoordinates

Amazing! Such a great atmosphere. This is a small bar that has great cocktails, but half of the charm is watching the bartender and the server (the only two people working here) do all the work. They welcome customers and take others with hypnotizing grace. Just be aware that you might be asked to pay in advance if the place is full and payment is cash only. We recommend the whiskey sour and trying to get a seat close to the action. The cocktails are priced at around ¥1200-1400. If you love a loud and buzzing place, this is NOT for you. This is a relatively quiet and chill bar with great music and ambiance. I don't know how, but even though the place was full (they had to decline customers several times) you could still have a conversation without having to shout. Sadly they are closed Sundays and Mondays and we won't be able to go again, but do yourself a favour and stop by if you are looking for a cocktail bar in Takayama.
