I normally don’t write negative reviews but I was really upset after my experience here today. Even though I’m a foreigner and I’m not fully aware of all the unspoken cultural rules here, the level of aggression and disrespect from the cashier I recieved is not okay ANYWHERE in the world.
I mistakenly dropped one of my items while being rushed to the tills by this server (short man with glasses). Realising this when I paid, i asked if it was okay if he would wait a moment while I took 30 seconds to grab the item again. I even checked my bags to ensure I didn’t somehow put it in my bag as I didn’t want to accidentally steal. When I came back, he proceeded to yell “TOO LATE!!” and said there was a line. By the way - there was only 3 people waiting and I’ve had way longer lines while being the only person serving customers at my retail job. My sister was paying for my products when I came back but he wouldn’t let me pay for the additional item. I was willing to accept this but I was shocked and taken aback by the aggressive tone and the way he screamed at me in front of the entire store. He was also rushing us and I was really angry by this point, so I forgot to put the item back down on the counter.
When I left the store while absent-mindedly having the product in my hand (honestly really distracted by how upset I felt) he then proceeded to scream at me and tell me I hadn’t paid for the product he had not let me add to the purchase. I immediately put it down on the counter as I was not intending on stealing it and apologised but I left the store feeling humilitated. He honestly needs stress management lessons, because I also work a very stressful and high-paced retail job in the middle of a CBD area and have never yelled at a customer in this way. A customer asking to grab another item quickly while at the register is standard and isn’t a big enough deal to warrant yelling at the person. There were also other ways he could’ve dealt with it that was not as aggressive, such as serving another customer first and putting my purchase aside (this is usually easy to do on a POS system btw) if he was so stressed about the small line that had formed.
I get genuine miscommunication and misunderstandings can happen but this man could defintely speak english, and the level of aggression was unlike anything I’d ever experienced from a retail employee. I would reccomend visiting one of the other convenience stores in Takayama - they are much more respectful...
Read moreBe ware of one of their scammy cashier (high-pitched old guy).
Usually I don't bother checking the change. But this cashier fussed about at the till a bit longer than one normally would, and grabbed some different coins here and there.
Upon getting the change, I saw 2x 1 yen coins which was very off for my 291 yen change. So I moved to an empty counter to count my change.
I didn't take a photo of the actual change. I ended up getting 2x 1 yen, 1x 100 yen and 2x 50 yen coins, , some 5 to 6x 5 yen coins. So I am getting around 60 yen short in change.
So I immediately jumped the queue to show the guy that I'm short of change. Like he knew he's in the wrong, he threw my change back in the till and counted out change like a normal cashier would (2x 100 yen, 1x 50 yen, 4x 10 yen and 1x 1 yen).
Don't just trust a big brand name thinking all their employees were honest people. Especially because this is a busy location with loads of tourists, this becomes a tempting...

I confirm everything user Alex Cheng wrote: the guy behind the counter that he photographed also yelled at us because we were putting away the things we had just bought (there was no one in line behind us!) and we didn't immediately understand what he was asking us to do to pay by card. He has obvious anger management problems, he should not work in contact with the public, maybe he doesn't like tourists but this is not the customer's problem.
There are many family marts, avoid this, he have to understand how to behave!
It's the first time that something like this has happened to me in Japan. I am very outraged by the treatment he has reserved for us. I put only one star because zero stars can't be done!
