Edo Tempura Yatai Jurokumon — Restaurant in Tokyo

This review is way overdue—but better late than never! We stumbled upon this cozy little gem back in February 2025.

It was a chilly night around 10 PM, and most restaurants were already closing. At first, we thought this place was closed too—but to our surprise, they welcomed us in and guided us to a tucked-away dining spot behind the bar that felt like a charming Edo-period hideout. We decided to take a chance, even though everything was in Japanese—and we’re so glad we did!

Despite the language barrier, the staff were incredibly kind—and even the regulars pitched in to help us order! We ended up enjoying the most delicious sweet and savory grilled unagi, along with perfectly crisp tempura and fresh sashimi.

At first, we definitely stood out as not being locals, and it felt a little intimidating. But the warmth of the place (and the people!) made it feel like home. We even got to chat with some locals, which turned into an impromptu cultural exchange. They might’ve been so entertained by how happy we looked that they secretly took care of our bill—talk about Japanese hospitality!

Before we left, I promised the owner I’d leave a review. Sorry it took a while—I had to go on a bit of a Google Maps adventure to find the place again. But even after all these months, the memory of that meal and the whole experience still stands out as one of the highlights of our trip.

ふらりと入ったお店でしたが非常においしい！コスパ高いお店です。お昼時間をとうにすぎて、ギリギリでランチが食べられるお店を探していたところに、ふらりと入った当店。そばや天ぷらに強みがあるようで、事前にリサーチなどせずに入店しました。

店内はカウンター席がならんでおり、お客さんでいっぱいでしたが何とか着席できました。後で気づきましたが、奥のほうには広い座敷席が用意されていました。奥から昼間にも関わらず宴会が開かれているようなにぎわう声も聞こえます。店内に鳴り響く競馬のテレビ中継も、江戸の雰囲気をあつらえたデザインによく合い、印象的でした。

着席してまず瓶ビールを注文。メニューを拝見しましたが、どれもとにかく種類が豊富で、お値段が何よりリーズナブルです。特に貴重な日本酒もかなり控えめなお値段のようで、日本酒好きなお客さんがタバコをくゆらせながら楽しんでいました。

オーダーした天丼はボリュームがあり食べ応え十分！野菜の天ぷらや、何よりやや大ぶりなエビの天ぷらが2本乗っていて、香りが食欲をそそります。瓶ビールと相まって、非常に満足感の高い一杯でした。
