Whilst jazz music played in the background, sitting at the counter area, you can watch as the staff make one of their signature dishes, the cream cake. You’ll noticed the various stages that go into making one over the course of your meal. Carr and attention shows the staff’s experience with delicate food. I had a chestnut curry and half matcha chestnut cream cake with sencha tea. It was a set meal well worth the money. The curry was not overly spicy, the flavours of the various elements paired well. The pickles and curry sauce complimented each other. The pickle acidity cut through the creaminess of the curry. The added bonito flakes and fish stock base of the curry came through without overpowering the dish. The few chestnut halves in the curry were cooked so that they retained their shape but near effortlessly fell apart in the mouth. The various stages of the cream cake preparation gear your mouth for what looks to be a symphony of flavour. That first bite does not disappoint. The cream is akin to a chestnut biscuit dough before it is baked but with a very soft texture. The other cream and match compliment the chestnut flavour by adding and not masking it. There is a pearl of strong matcha paste right at the bottom which can be used in moderation to spike a flavour of pure matcha into each bite. It sits on a crispy layer adding depth to each bite. The set meal was quite filling even after not eating much earlier in the day.
Would definitely recommend trying this place. I went here solo but for two I can imagine it would be a nice lunch date or for a quick business meeting. The staff are friendly and an English menu is available. If you’re not sure what to order, the staff can...
Read moreI visited on a Thursday afternoon and didn’t have to queue for a seat. It might be better if they had a more varied menu, but I suppose that as a specialty store, the current options work well as a representation of their focus. I ordered the Mont Blanc set with sparkling grape juice.
They prepared each Mont Blanc fresh at the counter, and you could tell they were very generous with the chestnut cream! The cream was light and not too sweet, complementing the matcha ice cream perfectly.
The service was excellent; the staff provided just the right amount of space for me to relax and enjoy my experience. I had a delightful time sitting at the counter, watching the team prepare the orders.
Overall, it was a decadent and thoroughly...
Read moreI love matcha ice cream and chestnut Mont Blanc so I thought this store can satisfy both of my food cravings from Kyoto. The store environment is tidy and clean with great decor and design. Unfortunately the food does not quite live up to the same standard. Matcha ice cream is not “matcha” enough and the chestnut Mont Blanc is on the sweet side. The major issue is, I do not feel matcha and chestnut Mont Blanc married to each other. The flavour profile just does not match well to my taste. Portion is on the smaller side. I’d rather make a visit to Daimaru at the Tokyo station to enjoy an authentic...
