I was able to go to Shoku Jigiraku = Whale, which I had longed for. Thank you to my neighbor âŒïž thank you ð. Kujira is a restaurant limited to one couple a day. And all the dishes they serve are whale, so it's a very unique restaurant. I had seen the restaurant before, but I never thought I would be invited! I was so grateful. Let me start with the price, which was just under 30,000 yen per person with sake pairings. However, I think the experience is well worth the price. All the dishes are whale. It starts with whale soup. The time starts at 19:00. Sake to go with it is served, and it is also great. There was a lot of sake from Chiba. From the soup, it was a sinking feeling. Next was the nikogori (boiled fish). And then, we enjoy the middle fatty tuna of the whale with different condiments! This goes well with sake and makes me the happiest (^^) I want to eat more! It is the sashimi that makes you think "I want more! Whale tare (sauce) and grilled whale bacon! It is also a superb dish. I am so impressed with all the things I ate for the first time in my life: âŒïž First time with food as an adult is very heartwarming â£ïž Then, fried Tatsuta and whale's motsu. And finally, whale hot pot, shabu shabu and porridgeð¥£. I am too happyð. They say whale is not very oily, and the soup in the nabe is no different, it is a broth made by boiling the reddish meat of the whale, so it is very oily and the oil is light and very tasty! The whale soup stock is so oily that it sometimes makes me want to eat vegetables, so if you don't like fatty meat, it might be a little tough. I love fatty meat, so I was able to eat it very happily and bitterly. I also learned a lot of trivia about whale, which I thought was worth more than the price. The host went out of his way to pair sake with the dishes (he also told me about a deal they had for the chef's menu), and the pairings were perfect with the wide and creative array of whale cuisine. It's clear that the chef and the host take the idea of terroir very seriously (I believe the chef is from the Boso Peninsula, where whale hunting takes place); much of the ingredients, such as the organic vegetables and traditionally ground panko as well as the whale meat and sake hail from the Boso. Some highlights were whale testicle sunomono (vinegared) which had a great toothsome texture, Koshigoi sake paired exquisitely with amazingly fresh and velvety hiramasa, saezuri whale sashimi, and whale steak.
The space is convivial and comfortable for both single diners and groups.
Apparently the shop is pursuing a plan to open up in New York. Good luck...
