Gateau Chocolat 🍫🍰 @cafe_lumiere_kichijyoji
Famous for its cute and instagrammable "yakigori" flaming shaved ice desserts, Cafe Lumiere is always super busy during the summer months, so I deliberately waited until the weather got colder so it would be easier to get a seat. ❄️😏
Aside from shaved ice, their cakes are very good too, with the cake set in particular offering extremely good value. 🉐
I ordered the most popular menu - gateau chocolate with hot coffee and it was very good. Made from the couverture chocolate, the cake was rich but not too sweet or bitter. 💯
The presentation of the plate was also excellent, with a dizzying array of complements including fluffy whipped cream, oreo-type cookie, candied orange slice, blueberry, cookie crumble, sliced strawberries and mint leaves. 🍪🍊🫐🍓🌿
This made it not only visually satisfying but also fun to pair different ingredients together and change up the taste and keep things interesting until the last bite. 😆
The coffee of the day was a Blue Dahlia blend which had a nice aroma, great level of acidity and a subtle hint of sweetness that matched well with the chocolate cake. 😋
The atmosphere of the cafe is laid back and relaxing, allowing you to soak in and enjoy the unique ornaments, picture books and eclectic furniture and decor on the walls. 👀
Located less than a minute's walk from Kichijoji South Exit, Cafe Lumiere is highly recommended for their food, desserts and wide range of coffee & teas. 👌🏼

There were plenty of seats available however walk ins were turned away at the door due to being booked so definitely recommend checking their website for openings and booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Overall, the kakigori shaved ice was delicious, visually pleasant and of course very photographable, averaging at ¥990-¥1500. A variety of drinks were also available around ¥500-800 each (masala chai tea, drip coffee, cream soda, etc) as well as your standard variety (cola, ice coffee etc). I would have given 5-stars, however was disappointed by the service. From being seated, it took 2 tries of talking to staff members and countless eye contact to be served, totalling about 20 minutes before someone would take our order. I wouldn’t have mind the wait time seeming as only two people are making the dishes, however, people who arrived after had their orders taken and their meals served before us which we thought was strange :( After waiting for our order to be taken, it took about 10-15 minutes for food to arrive. Overall, great cafe to experience something different and especially great for a summer outing, however I don’t know if I would visit again more of a novelty outing than a regular one. Also, good thing to note is the cafe...
Read moreWhat a roller coaster experience. They don’t accept new bills, IC card, or credit card even their food is not cheap.
On average, one desert cost almost ¥2K. We spent over ¥7k for the meal and dessert. The payment machine only accepts PayPay (only available to local Japanese ppl) or old bills. The shop does not accommodate customers to exchange new or old bills. We almost got stuck.
Also, in my reservation I have specified that we will order food then order dessert later. They literately ignore my inputs. After ordered the food, the waiter just gave us the bill for payment! This is poor customer service as they never confirm whether we have finished ordering. What makes the experience worse is that we did ask another server whether we can order the dessert after the meal and she said it was okay.
The shaved ice does look instagrammable; however, the flavor of it is too bland for my personal taste. I have no plans to go back or recommend...
