Loved this place. It's elaborately decorated in what I thought of as an exotic Far East meets India style; the service was friendly, helpful and attentive. The curry soups were superb, packed with rich and complex spice depth, generously proportioned and delicious. The ordering was a little confusing at first. There was an English sheet that explained how it all works, in an amusing blend of Eastern mysticism and Google Translate, but basically you choose a curry eg. chicken, pork, seafood, vegetable, choose a topping from an extensive list of eccentric options, and then a spice level, which has names like Nirvana and Aum Air. The increasing spice levels are priced accordingly, if unusually from 70 yen to 270 yen. I had the hottest, Aum Air, as I like chilli a lot. It was hot, probably a 7/10 for an enthusiastic chilli lover. The prices are very reasonable. For 2 curries and 2 large Asahis it was less then 4000 yen.

Very yummy spicy curry soup and super fun ambience! They have an English menu but it’s a bit confusing. Here’s what to do: pick your base (chicken/beef/veggie/etc), pick toppings (there’s also some on the menu under your glass tabletop that aren’t on the English menu), then pick your spicy level. I am a pretty big spice fan, and Ecstasy was the perfect level for me. Anymore and it would’ve been a challenge. Like other Japanese restaurants, you’ll have to flag your server down if you want to order anything, but they were very quick and helpful. Would definitely come again! Took a star off for the difficulty in figuring out how to order here.

Lots of hype around this place so I had to check it myself. It took about 15 minutes of waiting outside on a weekday followed by a 45 minutes long wait for my food to come since the place was packed. If you don't like waiting this place is probably not for you. To make things easier here is the system: You pick a curry type from: chicken, hamburger, momo, keema, veggie bean, pork kakuni, beef, seafood, veggie mushroom and special seafood. Then you pick the base: chicken or tomato "genki" curry (plus 121 yen) Then you pick for spiciness level with each level more expensive than the previous one: there are 7 levels with the top one (Aumair 虚空) being the most spicy (plus 297 yen). Nirvana (涅槃 the forth from the top, is considered the house recommendation, +220 yen). Then you can add toppings from a very long list: rolled cabbage, fried tofu, momo, cheese, fried chicken etc. etc. Each one for a different price. The soup is thin in my humble opinion and the entire dish is way below many other soup curry places in Shimokitazawa. The momo reminded me of gyoza and not of the real thing and all the rest of the ingredients were pretty avarage. I'm really sorry to write this since I was really expecting to eat in this place but it's just ok. One thing is that the options in this place are many. You can basically have hundreds of different combinations, toppings etc. soaybe there are other things to be had. The interior design here is extremely tacky and reminiscent of a very touristy place in India. But still, seating is nice and comfortable and you might feel for a second you're a backpacker in India/Nepal/Indonesia again (unless you are from one of these countries, in which case you should write a review!). Overall, disappointment. It's better to pick one of the other soup curry places in Shimo... Seeing the long line as I left made my heart sink a bit.

Score just based on my opinion and tasted preferences. Heard the hype of this curry place and saw the reviews so decided to try for myself. First impression, it didn't look like curry, didn't smell like curry, certainly didn't taste like curry. More like a Sichuan mala soup than not, just less numbing. None of the curry aroma, no any kind of milk or starch to give the soup a little more depth to hold everything together. I was so disappointed but not surprised since I did read some reviews about the watery soup. If some say this is Hokkaido style curry soup, it didn't look like it either. IMHO, this place does not serve curry, just some spiced watery soup with no resemblance of any curry I know of. Chai tea was good though. Anyway, I am quite surprised at the averaged high score in reviews, guess taste is very subjective, oh well...

A very spicy and delicious soup curry restaurant. I visited this place more than 5 times, and they always served the high quality spicy soup curry you cannot taste elsewhere. There are plenty options for flavors, contents, toppings, sidemenus, and drinks. First visitors and foreign visitors might be confused because they have to take several steps to order foods (The astral interior makes it more and more difficult), but other than this fact Magic Spice is a perfect restaurant satisfies the price, the food quality, and its amount.

Best soupy curry in Tokyo. First time visit for me and I had the chicken with a topping of cheese. As for the spicyness selection, next time I'll get the 2nd from top as the 3rd from top wasn't as spicy as I had hoped. Also, I almost got a second order of rice, so next time I'll have to remember to get a large serving of rice from start. The interior will never boar you as there is plenty of stuff to look at and the shop is interesting too. Really good and delicious place. A place you'd want to go even if you aren't in the area.
