Kitazawa Hachiman-jinja Shrine — Attraction in Tokyo

We came for Mount Fuji. We got rabbits, lava rocks, and serenity instead. Honestly? No regrets.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Setagaya, this shrine is a low-key charmer—one of those places that doesn’t shout “Instagram me!” but whispers “slow down, breathe, and maybe spot a god.” The main shrine is gorgeously detailed, flanked by banners, lanterns, and that quiet hush that tells you you’ve stepped out of modern Tokyo, even if there’s still a vending machine somewhere nearby.

We climbed the steps, hoping for the view—Mount Fuji, supposedly visible on a clear winter day. But alas, the skies were doing their best impression of steamed rice: white, fluffy, and completely obscuring Japan’s most famous peak. There’s even a sign showing you exactly what you would have seen if the weather had cooperated. Thanks, sign. Truly appreciated the passive-aggressive reminder.

What we did get, though, was delightful. Mini torii gates, mossy stone shrines, an adorable bunny garden (yes, rabbits are a theme here—maybe divine, maybe just cute), and a rugged, black volcanic rock Fuji mound topped with lucky cat figurines, foxes, frogs, and even a golden dragon or two. It’s like a tiny pilgrimage up the idea of Fuji. Spiritual leg day.

There’s also a purification basin, an ema board overflowing with wooden prayer plaques (many fox-faced, most hopeful), and a handful of other small sub-shrines that feel hidden until you’re right in front of them.

It’s not a big shrine. You won’t need more than 30–40 minutes. But it’s deeply atmospheric, gently strange in the best way, and full of little moments that feel like they matter—whether you’re snapping photos or just soaking in the quiet.

Pro tip: If you’re here for Fuji, come on a cold winter morning when the air is clear and the gods haven’t hit snooze on visibility. Otherwise? Enjoy the rabbits and let your expectations float away like the clouds that covered...

東京都世田谷区は代沢に鎮座します「北沢八幡宮」です。

創建年は不明ながら 15世紀末？16世紀中頃まで(1400年代末？1500年代中までの間の戦国時代)に、当時の当地の領主である吉良氏の吉良頼康が勧請(かんじょう)したと伝わります。(吉良頼康は生誕年は不明ながら1500年代中ぐらいまで生きた武将で有る事から)約600年近くの歴史ですね。

因みに吉良頼康は当時小田原北条氏の家臣でしたが、正室に北条氏二代目当主・北条氏綱の娘を娶って(めとって)います。北条氏家臣団の中でかなり力を持っていたのが伺えますね。 (北条氏綱の父は言わずもがな北条早雲です)

また、吉良頼康が北沢八幡宮を勧請してすぐに、吉良氏の家臣が所領として拝領され土着し、この地の開墾を始めた様です。

本殿は所々が少々色付けされており、色鮮やかでした。 また、神社の境内には富士見塚が有ります。この富士見塚は富士山の溶岩石で造られている様です。 この富士見塚の前に立つと、本物の富士山が富士見塚の向こう側に見えるスポットとなっています。

ほぉ～確かに… 東京都23区に有って遮るビルも無く、富士山が見えました見えました。素晴らしい。
