Food was actually outstanding - I think they could even be considered for a star, but the initial service let them down massively. The restaurant is advertised as a 10 cover restaurant. Firstly, this is not true. There are another 15 or so seats in a random room downstairs that has a completely different vibe, feel and interior to the actual restaurant. The seats downstairs are also at a counter however there are no staff members cooking behind that counter so even if you specifically book counter seating (which we did as we wanted to watch the action), they may still seat you in this weird room downstairs. So that’s what they tried to do to me and my partner. Not sure if it was because we weren’t Japanese or what, but we booked the final booking slot of the night - 20:30 - and there were 4 spare seats upstairs yet still they attempted to seat us in this downstairs room that felt like a different restaurant. I tried to say to the waiter that this isn’t what we were hoping for and please could we go upstairs and he repeatedly told me no because those upstairs seats were already reserved. Eventually for whatever reason he gave up and let us sit upstairs and turns out, those empty seats were not reserved already, as no one else entered the restaurant after us. This is what annoyed me and kind of put a dampener on the evening.
Main things I’d say is the food is epic but if you’re a tourist be prepared to put up at fight for sitting upstairs. Also note there are 3 reservation slots: 17:30. 19:30 and 20:30. We booked the last one which was a big mistake as we only had an hour till closing so couldn’t order anything else like the dessert pizzas which was a shame. Anyway overall good but they need to work on...
Read moreSavoy is one of my favorite pizza places in Tokyo. They have another location that’s not too far from this location and I’m not sure which one is the original. We’ve been to the other one twice and loved it so we wanted to try this location to see if it’s any different.
We went to Savoy Tomato & Cheese during lunch hours on a weekday. They have the same menu as Savoy Azabujuban - a 1000 yen lunch set that comes with a peach iced tea, a salad, and a choice of either the marinara or the margherita pizza. It’s amazing how this is only 1000 yen considering the quality and the location (Azabujuban is one of the most expensive areas to live in). The pizzas are delicious and we loved how they kept refilling the peach iced tea, which was super refreshing. We loved both pizzas, but I have a slight preference for the margherita here. We have another favorite pizza place in Tokyo called Seirinkan, which also only serves margherita and marinara pizzas and there I have a slight preference for the marinara even though the margherita is probably the more popular of the two at both Seirinkan and Savoy.
Like Savoy Azabujuban, Savoy Tomato & Cheese only has a counter with about 10 seats, but unlike the Azabujuban location I never see a long line here, which is great. This location also has a different vibe. While Savoy Azabujuban has a more rustic feel to it, this place has a more modern and contemporary feel and is well lit. The service at both locations are great and I would highly recommend...
Read moreAs far as pizzas go, this style isn’t really my cup of tea, because it’s a floppy-soggy mess with zero structure or crisp. That being said, this was the best Neapolitan I’ve ever had and was 3.7, but bumped to a 4 because of the following. It seemed much care went into picking quality ingredients and crafting the finished product. I really enjoyed wiping the good olive oil of the bottom of the plate with the bread, I mean crust haha. We had the margarita and the special with wagyu beef. The margarita was by far the best Neapolitan I’ve ever had. The balance of the flavors were spot on. It was fresh and the freshness really shined through. The wagyu beef special was kind of a letdown. It had sliced wagyu beef, which was very nice. It was also topped with a runny egg and soy sauce. It all sounds good, but it didn’t work for me. After a couple slices, I ended up eating the beef by itself and then wiping the plate with the bread, I mean pizza dough, of the egg and soy sauce. Thus was a soggy mess that just made me feel like I was eating sloppy Neapolitan from any other place. Avoid anything outside the margarita or marinara. Service was outstanding. Enjoyed the chef table experience. Was it worth $60+ for 2 pizzas and a few sodas…. Sorry,...
