Tanakatei is a one of the very few specialist tea shops in Kichijoji, and has been around for almost 45 years. They offer a wide range of black, flavour, fruit, herb & Chinese teas. 😲

Even if you don't like tea, there is coffee, cocoa and other drinks on the menu too. They also sell cookies, and other baked sweets which are perfect for gifting and souvenirs. 🎁

The decor, atmosphere and style of Tanakatei is quite nostalgic, and transports you to an English teahouse - with their use of beautiful teacups, teapots and saucers, it is also a visually satisfying experience. 🧐

When I arrived at 4pm, there were only 3 types of cake remaining, so better to arrive before 1-2pm if there is a certain cake that you are targeting. 🎯

I decided to go for the raspberry chiboust, and ordered the Tanaka Tei Blend (which is an original mix of Darjeeling, Assam and Nilgiri). 🫖

The tea is served in a teapot, comes with its own little 3 minute hourglass) and you can choose straight, milk or lemon (or a combination). 🫖🥛🍋

Hot water refills are also available so that you can continue to enjoy the fragrant leaves. Coming from England, I really appreciated this opportunity of unlimited tea! 😋

The chiboust has a rich flavour, containing 2 different types of cream, and the sweet & sour tang of raspberry is refreshing on the palate. Next time I want to try their mille-feuille or the lemon pie, which is their most popular cake. 🥇

フレンチトーストは1晩じっくり漬け込んであるそうで 本当にトロトロで美味しくて二人で目を合わせて感動していました

チャイはジンジャーが結構効いてて辛くて 好きな人は好きだなと思いました

ティーカップはお客さんに似合ったものを提供してくださるお店で 緑の葉っぱが描かれたシンプルなティーカップで 大人らしさと可愛さどちらもあり嬉しいような複雑な気持ちでした

安定の美味しさで様々な紅茶とケーキが楽しめるお店。 昔特に好きだったメープルティーやレモンメレンゲパイはすっかり見かけませんが、ティーシェイクやロイヤルミルクティーは健在。 ケーキは昔はもっと美味しく感じてましたが、好みのケーキが減ったのと、他に美味しいケーキ屋さんが非常に増えたので、こちらのケーキは無難に美味しいぐらいにしか感じなくなってしまいました。

ただ、友人と行った際に、ケーキの品切れが多くて少々難儀しました。 こちらのお店では昔からですが、入店時にどのケーキがあるか、自分で見て把握しないといけない感じなのです。 メニュー表はありますが、全てのケーキが掲載されていて、今現在あるケーキは現物を見に行かないと分かりません。 しかも店員さんも全く把握してないので、友人が注文→店員さんが受ける→やっぱり無かったので違うお品を→再度注文→それもなかったので……というのが３回繰り返され、いやいい加減店員さんも把握しようよ、と思ってしまいました。 （どうしようもないので友人に「自分で見に行った方がいいよ」とオススメしましたが）

ちなみに昔は注文をメモせず、店員さんが記憶して復唱する変わったやり方だったので、ケーキの把握までできてなくてもあまり気になりませんでした。今はあるケーキか無いケーキのどちらかだけ覚えればいいので、それはもう少し把握しても良さそうな気がします（少なくとも伺ったときはケーキの種類が10もなかったので）。 もしくは、使いまわしのメニュー表（つまり全席に無いので数が少ない）に売り切れのシールでも貼れば大して手間でも無いのでは。

紅茶も今のところギリギリ値段に見合う味ですが、淹れる人によって味が全く変わります。一番美味しかった店員さんの紅茶と比べてしまうと、今は魅力が半減してしまいます。それでも一般的な紅茶屋さんよ...
