A Noble Effort, A Distant Echo
One arrives with a certain hope, a flicker of anticipation for a taste of a place left behind. The promise of New York street food in the heart of Tokyo is a powerful siren's call. The intention here is clear: to replicate the unpretentious, gut-punching satisfaction of a Halal Guys or a Philly street corner.
The first few bites of the Philly Cheesesteak offered a glimpse of what could be. The beef, properly mashed and tangled with sweet, yielding onions, was a savory delight. The cheese, a gooey, unapologetically processed concoction, did an admirable job of mimicking the classic Whiz and American blend. It was a glorious, greasy mess that nearly succeeded. The bread, was its downfall—a sad, stale roll that had clearly surrendered to the humidity, collapsing into a mushy tragedy that undermined the entire sandwich.
A similar story unfolded with the Chopped Cheese. Amidst the familiar beef and cheese was a sauce that was, against all odds, rather spectacular in its own right—a strange, tangy echo of a Jack in the Box taco salsa that provided a surprising and welcome kick. But this flicker of brilliance was extinguished by a core component. The lettuce, tired and wilted, carried an unmistakable taste of decay, a rancid note that permeated every bite. Once again, the stale bread sealed its fate.
The greatest offense, however, was the Chicken and Lamb Over Rice. This was a dirge. The foundation, the rice itself, was a bed of dry, flavorless, short-grain pellets over pilaf, its vibrant yellow color a hollow under seasoned promise. The chicken, in a city where tender poultry is the norm here in Tokyo, was inexplicably dry and stringy. But the lamb... the lamb was a culinary crime. Dry, rigid cubes of what one hopes was meat, they tasted of nothing but the ghosts of grills past, desiccated beyond recognition and devoid of any seasoning. They possessed the texture and flavor of a freeze-dried veggie patty. While the white sauce was a passable, if mayo-heavy, imitation, the red sauce was an anemic whisper of spice, a shadow of the fiery original it sought to honor.
I wanted to embrace this place. The ambition is palpable. This meal was a profound disappointment, a collection of almosts and outright failures. I left with a sense of melancholy for what could have been. One gives it three stars out of a sliver of optimism—a hope that this was a singular, catastrophic off-day. Perhaps a second visit will find the kitchen on better terms with its ingredients. One can only hope.

Read moreTerrible customer service. My friend and I walked in and were the only ones there. We ordered our food and took our seats. A few minutes later a group of tourists walk in and take over the entire place. They were rowdy, rude, and disrespectful. The managers did nothing to settle these customers down. Despite having ordered first, the tourist group received their food first, while we waited for at least twenty minutes for ours to show up. The managers were clearly friendly with the tourists and barely apologized for how late our food showed up. Not too long into our mediocre meal, one of the tourists who was clearly on something, tripped over my friend and I, spilling drinks, and very nearly injuring us. My phone cover cracked on impact and he stepped on our purses. The managers and waiters did not apologize nor did they seem sympathetic to what had just happened .In fact, they seemed get some enjoyment out of it. Truly awful experience from start to finish. Again, I’d like to emphasize that the people running the restaurant did nothing to remedy the truly...
Read moreGot recommended by friend to come here for a real taste of Mexican/American food. I had the Authentic chopped cheese sandwich as it was the cheapest on the menu. We ate in, even though it’s not really a sitting place and it’s a gateway to a barber shop too, so any customers who wants to go there needs to pass through but I guess it can be a good vibe!
The food was great, nicely toasted bread, the flavours were amazing except for meat that had a bit too much gristle to my liking.
The staff who took our order was not the greatest customer service. He even asked if we had smaller change because he was more worried about GW coming up. Basically not the best welcoming especially chewing gum, glad he wasn’t preparing the food.
Would I recommend. Yes but maybe to take out and the sandwiches could be sloppy so there could be so...
