Beautiful british-pub-styled pub but after renovation with a very japanese take on the food and only local non-brand beers.

This pub was already very nice last year when I visited several times, so was very dismayed to find it closed earlier this year. It has since been renovated and reopened as the "Rose and Crown".

I had poked my head in briefly and the refurbished interior looks awesome! I finally had some time to try it and was, unfortunately, very disappointed. The menu now consists of more japanese izakaya food with a nod towards british food than british pub grub and there are no british beers on the menu at all, just locally-brewed variations. The prices have also gone up since before the renovations.

Absolutely gorgeous pub inviting you to chill with a group of friends but don't expect british food or drinks here, you're better off...

I awarded four stars, though frankly, that was an act of treason against my own palate. The fish was so diminutive it could have been a sardine in disguise and the chips, oh, the chips! were French fried. French! As in, the culinary equivalent of waving a white flag at the concept of proper British fare.

This is not merely a culinary misstep, it is a gastronomic heresy. As a genuine Englishman, I felt a cold dread seep into my bones, as if Queen Victoria herself had just been served a croissant at Balmoral.
