I was craving Vietnamese food whilst visiting family in Japan and they suggested trying Thi Thi as it featured in the popular tv show, Solitary Gourmet. It's located a short walk from Kamata train station and is basement level, so there's flight of stairs to go down. Our group of 6 arrived at around 12:30pm and told it would possibly be 40-50 min wait, so we waited. I could tell as soon as I walked in as the delicious aroma hit me. We ordered the banh khot which was crunchy and you could really taste the coconut, goi ga, rice paper rolls with prawn balls and spring rolls (egg rolls), bun thit nuong which had the charcoal grill taste, chicken and beef pho. All dishes came pretty quick, with plenty of herbs and greens and all satisfied my cravings...just yummy. Hubs and I had to have vietnamese iced coffee too and the in-laws tried the variety of Vietnamese beers. I think the chicken pho order was mistaken as hieu tiu which is a less spiced broth with bits of pork lard, delicious too so we didn't mind. Had a quick chat with our lovely waitress who spoke Japanese, Vietnamese and English.
I've had Vietnamese food in Japan before and can say this place was hands down the most authentic in taste, I recommend all the dishes we tried and will try more next...
Read moreThe restaurant is down in the basement and it fills up fast. We arrived only shortly after opening and it was completely full. Every time someone left or the server checked on new parties waiting, it smelled amazing, so we were more than willing to wait. I'm so glad we did. I would eat here again in a heartbeat.
I got bún chả giò (52), the rice noodles with fried spring rolls, and my partner got the gỏi tôm (7) or Vietnamese style okonomiyaki. They were both delicious, but we both preferred the rice noodles with spring rolls. Yum. All the different flavors and textures mixing together were amazing. One of my favorite meals so far this year. In fact, everything looked and smelled so good that I wished we lived closer, so we could try everything on the menu.
The one bummer was service was okay, but they weren't very attentive. We had to flag them down to ask for water refills more than once. They were very busy, but not all servers seemed...
Read moreEnglish and Japanese below.
The food at Thi Thi is already well-known for its deliciousness, so I won’t comment further on that. No matter how many times I eat here, the flavor remains consistent, which is something I really like about this place. Also, since I’m from Saigon, every time I eat here, it feels like I’m dining in my hometown, as the taste really suits my palate. However, one downside might be the part-time staff here. They left before I finished ordering, and after I ordered one dish, they turned away again. I had to call them back four times, which was a bit awkward. They even got my order wrong, but since the food was good, I didn’t want to make a fuss. I’ll definitely come back to try more dishes.
