The ambiance upon coming in seemed fine. The food was too expensive for the quality in my opinion. I had the Fish and Chips and the batter wasn't crispy, the fish was extremely slimy, close to the texture of uncooked chicken. The fish lacked good seasoning. The fries or chips that the dish came with were pretty okay. You have to order a drink and water is not free which, is something that was pretty unfortunate. The water was 660¥.
The customer service was okay; there was a really friendly gentleman that tried to speak English with my party and I, even though we didn't ask for that/he did not have to put in the effort to do that. That was certainly very kind. But aside from that, I think the experience was not up to par. For the taste and quality of the food, I just think it should have been a bit cheaper.
Edit: the owner's response is below and is pretty trashy. If you're confident in your food and your service, there would be no need to get haughty and defensive. An actual quality restaurant would know how to validate a customer's experience at their restaurant, whether it's good or bad. Clearly this owner lacks the ability to do that. I was not bothered by just the drinks. I stated that it was both the fish and the drinks that were the problem. There's no need for 'assumptions' to be made. The fish made me feel quite sick afterwards so even if other customers supposedly praise it, the truth of my experience is that it was awful. So I typed such. Please take several seats before trying to invalidate a customer's experience. If you can't handle constructive or negative reviews, maybe you shouldn't be running a business. This stuff just happens sometimes and shouldn't be taken as a threat to anyone's ego, if you care about improvement. Clearly you don't. Steer clear of this restaurant if you're looking for quality. There are certainly better places near...
Read moreFor me, the Tavern is almost as much a community / cultural centre for UK expats and English-speaking locals as it is a bar / restaurant. I have been going for over a year since moving to Japan, sometimes with friends and sometimes alone, and have met so many interesting and friendly people from Japan, the UK, US and many other places. There is sometimes live music, live sport or other entertainment which is always great. The food is excellent and, although not on the menu, the Owner / chef are able to accommodate some changes to meals to make them gluten free (e.g. the fish and chips, which is outstanding) (NB I am not celiac, just intolerant). There are occasional specials such as pork pies made in-house as well. Christmas dinners are available on Christmas day by reservation and I am forever grateful to the owners for accommodating my partner's allergies to make a special Christmas dinner for us both.
The atmosphere is very authentic and the staff all have good English, like a home...
Read moreCame in for the Guinness. Left really enjoying the food. The Guinness was cold and fresh, some of the best I’ve had in japan. Started with the curry fries. The fries were average but the curry was very very good. Worth getting for sure. Had a Shepard’s pie which was very traditional and tasty. Did not opt for the fish and chips because it’s pretty hard to mess them up. I would assume from looking at them that they were delicious. Also tried the rice with spicy curry(can’t remember the name). Probably the best thing I had. It was spicy, but not enough to be unenjoyable. John the owner was great, came and introduced himself and I could see him working away in the kitchen helping to prepare the food. Nice to see an owner not afraid to get his hands dirty. Great British bar, I will...
