If Basil Fawlty was running a cafe it would be better than this. Never in my experience have I met two people less suited to work in the hospitality industry than Louise and her second in command the Scots 'lady'. I was on a visit to Gorey with my partner my sister and my mother who is very elderly and uses a wheelchair ,after a walk around the harbour we decided to stop for a coffee and ice cream the young man who took the order was pleasant and competent however things were about to go downhill very quickly We noticed on the menu that ice cream cones weren't available so my partner walked the ten feet across the street to buy ice-cream from a neighbouring business, then as we waited for our coffee then Scots ' lady ' informed us that we were not permitted to eat an ice cream on her alfresco terrace, fine I thought we will get our coffee and leave, not good enough. The manager appeared sat down beside my mother and I and told us she wouldn't move until we left her terrace, I enquired as to the signage that would tell us that we had transgressed so heinously as to eat an ice cream on her alfresco area at this point she flounced back to the innards of the shop. Scots 'lady' made another appearance then raising her voice telling us we had to leave and at the same moment telling us that it wasn't her fault she was just doing her job, this happened a further three occasions and at that point I suggested that she might have Germanic heritage, this she denied. I tried to explain to Helga Brandt that I would leave when we received the coffee we had purchased I asked her to put it into takeaway cups to facilitate the process and the icing on the cake was when she told us that she would have to charge us for the cups I have a decent imagination but couldn't make this up . I had paid with a twenty note and had a handful of change thrust into my hand , I got no receipt so couldn't tell you how much I was charged for the coffee cups . Coffee it turns out was very substandard someone who wished to be unkind would call it swill and none of us finished it . Please avoid this establishment at all costs especially if you are elderly as several other reviews on here would...
Read moreThis place has a lot of reviews because of its relatively "prime" location but it's far from the best place to eat in Gorey. Seating inside and outside can make it an attractive option when the sun is shining.
The staff are friendly enough but there are a few issues that would be easy to address.
If you're going to serve a salad garnish with a jacket potato, at least make it worth eating rather than limp and not very edible-looking.
The quality of the takeaway sandwiches is very variable: tuna & sweetcorn baguette gets you exactly that - no salad etc making it pretty dry & monotonous; BLT is on the other hand very good.
The service can be a bit random - Last time I was there, I ordered inside but told them I was waiting for a table; when a table became available I grabbed it, but it then took a long time before the food arrived as it seemed there had been some confusion about the order.
The coffee is...
Read moreVery disappointed to see this café dumping their commercial waste around the harbour area. Stale bread, waste oil and all manner of other products are disposed of in litter bins that are designed for public use.
I think it is a real shame, in these times of environmental awareness, the café refuses to a dear to the rules and on disposing of commercial waste and seeks to add it to the normal waste generated by the public.
In a very small beautiful areaâs, and with so many flowering decorations carefully tended to by volunteers, it seems very wrong for them not to make some sort of environmental contribution rather than polluting it when they should pay the commercial rates to dispose of...
