老灶火锅laozao hotpot — Restaurant in Nairobi

To be honest, this restaurant has some nice stuff and the spicy pot is not bad. we were referred by friends, so had quite high expectation about the place. If you can handle bad services and overpriced meal, you can eat here. The reasons we dislike the restaurant are it is very pricey. we paid 4000ksh/person, and we ordered normal stuff and very little alcohol. the only option for payment is cash. eventually the owner allowed us to pay using mpesa, but we had to asked her a few time before she agreed. the owner is really impolite and communication with the waiters was difficult. the waiter told us the dipping sauce is free, but the owner eventually charge us 200ksh each without checking how many of us actually used the sauce. The waiter brought us an extra plate of meat that we didn't order. the owner forced us to pay for it. The food was phenomenal, the portion size is big. I do recommend you go with a group of 3-4, because the portions are large and there is no option to downsize.

However, the reviews of other people are true that they try to add extra charges. I was waiting for a friend for 30 minutes, we ordered, they started bringing out the food and informed us that the menu changed and every single item is 100 ksh more. I got furious and told them then I am going to change my order ( note everything is separate, even the sauce!). They finally relented at the end to the “old” menu because the “madame” agreed.

Dishonest staff, terrible service. They tried the old "prices have changed" trick, randomly adding over 500 shilling to my bill... Fortunately I noticed and called them out, so they sheepishly reverted to the correct price. They also didn't mention until the end that they would charge me 200 bucks each time I went to get some sauce! Which is outrageously expensive for something that in most restaurants is free. (I wonder if they charge all customers for this, or if this was just the part of their scheme to get as much money as possible out of me?) And finally, they didn't mention until the end of the meal that they don't take bank card.
