Not what I was expecting, but still a darn good sit-down experience!
The website and photos will make you think this is a more mature affair for foodies. On the site, it's a great showcase of what it offers, asking for reservations, etc. However, when I went as a walk-in, it was loud and there were a lot of children. Brightly lit. Not an elegant affair. Which is fine by me, but I expected different. Keep this in mind.
Service is FANTASTIC. I actually had a hard time keeping track of my waiter because everyone was pitching in with a team effort. I did not have cell service and there is no free WiFi here, so they have options of a QR code for a menu OR a paper menu (which does not explain all the dishes or have photos of each dish). But they tried to explain to me what things were, which I thought was incredibly patient and beyond what they had to do. Everyone was very attentive and friendly!
They dropped off some pickles and olives along with a literal bag of packaged Arabic pita bread (saj) and pita chips after they took my order. Was a bit weird to see it still in the packaging, but no biggie to me.
Started off with the falafel, which, honestly, was more pleasant to eat than flavorful. Presentation was VERY nice and is exactly as pictured on the site, but there wasn't a whole lot of flavor.
The main dish came at the same time, which was the momawash shrimp. I was almost afraid they swindled me of seafood like a cheaper restaurant would... but the shrimp was hidden underneath the rice. This was VERY flavorful and the shrimp was succulently-sweet and not rubbery! The fried onion pieces on the side also added texture and flavor to the rest of the dish.
Dessert was very nice. I have a sweet tooth so it might not be to everyone's liking, but the mafroukeh was great. Nice, light, and again, lots of different flavors with the different herbs and spices.
Definitely worth the hubbub. Just keep in mind that it is not a quiet or romantic setting (unless you appreciate the din and...
Read moreI revisited Mais Alghanim for the first time since my one previous visit in 2016..
The service and atmosphere here are superb.. The restaurant has a great vibe, and the menu offers a wonderful variety of items..
I sampled their Shrimp Hammes hot appetizer, which is described as succulent shrimp sautéed with their special spiced sauce.. The appetizer was delivered hot and fresh.. The grilled shrimp and spiced sauce combined for a wonderfully flavored and delicious starter..
I ordered their Mais Alghanim Grill for my main course.. The two skewers of Kabbab meat, one Shish Taouk (chicken cubed marinated in garlic, lemon, and spices), and one Tikka (tenderloin cubes seasoned with a traditional spice blend) were presented with grilled vegetables and a side of french fries..
The entrée was delightful.. The three meats had distinct and great flavors, and the fries were perfectly crisp and had just the right amount of salt..
I washed everything down with the Caribbean Mojito mocktail, and it, too, was delightfully refreshing and wonderfully presented.. For dessert, I sampled a "medium sweet" serving of French coffee, and it, too, was delightful..
This restaurant sits in a location that offers spectacular views of the adjacent Kuwait 🇰🇼 Bay and nearby Kuwait Towers, and we were seated along the windows in the dining room that allowed us to enjoy those views during our dinner service..
