Smokies is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, offering a unique dining experience unlike any other in the city.
As a family-owned establishment, it exudes warmth and authenticity from the moment you step through the door. The highlight of Smokies lies in its signature smoking technique, which infuses every dish with a tantalizing aroma and rich flavor that is simply irresistible. From succulent meats to savory sides, each offering is a testament to the culinary craftsmanship of the chefs. One standout drink that demands attention is the pineapple tapai. Try it, and you will understand why I love it.
However, what truly sets Smokies apart is not just the exceptional food, but the genuine hospitality extended by the restaurant owner. With a warm smile and infectious enthusiasm, they personally engage with diners, sharing stories behind the dishes and ensuring every guest feels welcomed and valued.
Despite its culinary excellence, Smokies remains refreshingly affordable, offering a reprieve from the exorbitant prices often associated with high-end dining establishments. This commitment to accessibility ensures that everyone can indulge in a truly memorable dining experience without breaking the bank.
Having sampled similar smoked fare at upscale restaurants, I can attest that none come close to matching the quality and flavor offered at Smokies. It's a testament to the skill and passion poured into every dish, making it a must-visit destination for anyone craving a taste of Kota Kinabalu's culinary heritage.

Read moreI’d give it a strong 5 star if the prices were lower. Like at least a 10-20% lower (ideally). It’s not incredibly overpriced, but I’d love the portions bigger for this price. RM38 for 100g salmon? (I hope I got the weight right, that’s what I vaguely remember from what the owner told me). The salmon was also a bit dry. Other than that, LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE about their food 🥰 so glad to have tried this place.
The pulled lamb, beef brisket were very flavourful and tender. The chicken meatballs were juicy and tender as well, the gravy goes so well with the meatballs. Very original.
The owner also recommended their tapai pineapple juice, which was really good! It’s a nice surprise!
The environment is clean, comfortable, quite simple. All the tables were occupied, which explains the quality of the food.
The owner was very friendly to recommend their best dishes to us. I can tell he and the team put in a lot of thoughts and effort into their business.
I’ll definitely come back again! Highly...
Read moreIntroduced from their Facebook posting. And I gotta say. I'm in awe with their food! The price is very reasonable and the meat is very, VERY TENDER! I mean... If you saying McDonald's or KFC or even Upperstar itself is far more cheaper and delicious, then think again after you tasted their food. RM12 (I ordered Satay Chicken w/ Rice) is definitely well spend.
The owner/boss is very friendly and enjoy chatting with their customer while waiting and explaining this and that about their menus. I totally enjoyed how they able to pull this out while maintaining very competitive price. The store staff is also very attentive towards their customers.
Store location. I wouldn't say strategic, but very easily spotted besides the streets even if when you're driving or rode a motorcycle.
TL;DR Totally recommended! For those who looking a meal with very...
