After chilling for about 30 minutes at the Sky Terrace, it was time to visit David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant for the afternoon tea. Ascending the flight of stairs from the Sky Terrace, you’ll enter a garden that has a little pond in the middle and greenery on each side of the terraced-house restaurant. This is also probably why the restaurant has a “hilltop garden” attached to it. Afternoon tea is available from 3pm to 6pm and after we were seated, the staff brought over the afternoon tea menu…
We decided upon the afternoon tea set for two, priced at RM118++. Do note that it takes about 20 minutes of preparation time. Which is ok as it allowed us time to wander around the gardens and take in the sights and sounds. Sounds, because there is literally a family of exotic birds roaming the premise. While we were there, a particularly beautiful blue-coloured species was posing while a group of guests were busy snapping away on their cameras at a close distance…
For drinks, we chose Peach and Passion Fruit tea which allowed refills of hot water. Note that coffees are not included in the afternoon tea set. Soon, the 3-tiered afternoon tea of David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant arrived…

Read moreWent up Penang Hill on a Saturday night being my last night in Penang and booked a table at David Brown (the only decent place to dine in the evening). I preferred plant based or vegan if possible. When I placed my order for their one of two vegan dish, it was not available. In fact, both vegan dishes were not available. So I chose my second best choice, the chicken mushroom pie. It was not available as well. My third but compromised choice was the nasi lemak. You guessed it... It was not available. I asked the wait staff to point out what's available, they couldn't answer. And I shared my diet requirements and requested the restaurant manager to ask the chef to come up with something off the menu. They came back to me and offered "boiled vegetables". Yes, that was quoted word for word. Was totally disappointed with the experience and didn't want to spend a ringgit more on the dinner, sharing the one meal my friend successfully ordered with her.
The next day, my friend who made the booking, received a call from the head chef, Zul, asking for feedback. Indeed, we gave him an earful. He apologised and offered us a discount to dine there again. We...

However, my initial experience was a bit confusing. The servers seemed preoccupied with their own conversations, leaving me unsure of where to sit. After asking twice, a kind server finally guided me and told me I could sit anywhere.
The restaurant offers a fine-dining setting with an extensive menu of Western dishes, pastries, and beverages. I decided to try their sandwich, which was just average for my taste. Unfortunately, the bread was a little hard, which took away from the experience. Pricing is quite steep—likely due to the location and exclusivity of dining at Penang Hill.
They also offer an evening tea set from 3 PM to 6 PM, which could be a nice treat for those who enjoy afternoon tea.
Overall, the service and food quality could use some improvement. Still, it’s worth a visit if you’re already at Penang Hill and want to enjoy the scenic view in a...
