A beautifully decorated restaurant serving some of the best Western food I’ve had in Penang.
Parking was a little tricky on this small road, but fortunately we arrived early and were able to find a space a couple minutes down the road.
The restaurant has a very clean, modern look from the outside and the interior was no different. A really nice atmosphere, air-conditioned, and with a private room available (comfortably seating up to 12). Even the menu had a nice feel to it, coming in a nice leather binder.
The service was very friendly and attentive, with the staff seeming to have good knowledge of the menu and able to recommend dishes based on a few of our party’s preferences and dietary requirements. The service was quite slow though, and our main courses arrived at quite different times rather than together, meaning some members of our party had almost finished while others were still waiting. Some of the servers seemed a little inexperienced, on occasion just placing dishes randomly on the table without checking whose it was. I should note that this restaurant has only just opened (a few weeks ago I think), so some teething problems are to be expected.
The food overall was very tasty. A highlight for me was the paella, with excellently cooked squid and rice packed full of flavour. My steak was cooked nicely to medium rare as requested, though the texture was a little on the soft side for my liking - I would prefer a bit more char and bite to the steak. It did have good flavour though and is definitely one of the better steaks I’ve had in Penang. The pomme purée was lovely and smooth and the accompanying vegetables well cooked. The sauce also had great flavour. Some elements of this dish I thought were excellent and with some tweaks wouldn’t be out of place on a Michelin star menu.
The bread was fine - nothing special but warm and soft. I liked the idea of the different flavour butters, but I only really enjoyed the charcoal truffle one. The pesto butter tasted just like pesto, but I found myself thinking I would’ve preferred just a really good butter with some sea salt. The third butter was said to be miso by the wait staff, but tasted very clearly of mustard.
Overall, a lovely restaurant with some good and some great food. Given a little time, I think this could certainly be worthy of five stars and I look forward to returning and trying more of their...
Read moreOverall, I highly recommend visiting Fam Dining — just note that it's better to take a taxi there, as the surrounding roads aren’t very walkable.
The food was delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff were friendly and responsive throughout the meal.
I spent my vacation in Penang with my partner and celebrated her birthday here. I had left a special request in the reservation and also sent an email asking if I could pre-order a small cake to surprise her. I didn’t receive a reply, so I assumed there wouldn’t be any arrangement. But to my surprise, the staff added a birthday decoration to the crème brûlée we ordered. It was just some chocolate writing and fruit on the side — simple, but it made the experience truly...
Read moreI was lucky enough to be introduced to this place by a local friend during my weekend visit, and I’m so glad I went!
From the moment I walked in, the interior design looks amazing and I was impressed by the stunning food presentation—it truly felt like every dish was crafted with care.
I also appreciated how accommodating they were with my set menu request, making a few adjustments to suit my preferences.
The vibe of the place is just perfect for a cozy meal with friends, family, or that special someone. It’s the kind of spot that feels both intimate and inviting.
One thing to keep in mind: seating is limited, so be sure to make a reservation if you’re...
