Visited this hawker centre in Penang during the day – it was quiet with no crowd. Only the Bak Kut Teh and seafood zhi char stalls were open.
We tried the Bak Kut Teh (soup version) – the broth was very umami and came with free refills. I requested lean meat pork ribs and was pleasantly surprised – the meat was soft, tender, and almost falling off the bone (肉够软,差不多脱骨).
From the seafood stall, we ordered the Teo Chew–style steamed fish (金目鲈鱼). Instead of preserved vegetables (酸菜), the chef used sour plum (酸梅) at our request. The result was above average – very flavourful and well-balanced.
The 桂花翅炒蛋 came with glass noodles (冬粉) instead of shark’s fin, which was expected given the price. It was average but still tasty, with a homely feel.
We also had stir-fried sweet potato leaves with garlic (蒜清炒番薯叶) and stir-fried yau mak (oil lettuce) with garlic (蒜清炒油麦菜). Both were simple, average, but tasty in that comforting, home-cooked style.
Overall, a pleasant daytime stop – the Bak Kut Teh and steamed fish were standouts, while the other dishes were hearty...
Read moreFood here has dropped tremendously especially the infamous roasted chicken wings. The boss focuses more on profit instead of maintaining the quality of the food. It used to be no.1# in penang with the full of aroma chicken wings which is filled with honey but now you can only taste the saltiness and the chicken is too dry , taste 1/10.
The seafood stall known for the stingray is very dull and bland. The chilli paste has a funny taste and not freshly made. Fish not cooked enough yet being served. Taste is out 2/10.
Pasta stall is previously from burma road food court shifted here. It used to be one of my favourite pasta in town but perhaps due to this tourist spot Gurney Drive, the quality has dropped and service is messed up. The boss seems to be very forgetfull on what customers ordered.
The drinks is cheap but not as good as people say. Hahaha sorry there are other places which is way better than here.
The only stall that is so tasty and makes you come back is the satay stall at the corner. Very good and well done!...
