Nestled in the heart of Ayer Itam, Penang, Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu is a culinary institution that has been delighting locals and tourists alike since the 1970s. This humble eatery, located in a low-cost flat, has garnered a legendary status for its authentic and flavorful nasi kandar, making it a must-visit for any food enthusiast.
Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu is renowned for its wide variety of dishes, each prepared with meticulous attention to detail and a blend of spices that have been perfected over generations. The star attraction here is undoubtedly the nasi kandar, a dish that combines steamed rice with an assortment of curries and side dishes.
One of the standout dishes is the Fish Head Curry, a rich and aromatic curry that is both spicy and tangy, with tender fish head pieces that melt in your mouth. The Ayam Ros (Rose Chicken) is another favorite, featuring succulent chicken pieces cooked in a fragrant tomato-based sauce. For those who enjoy seafood, the Kari Sotong (Squid Curry) is a must-try, offering a delightful mix of tender squid and robust curry flavors.
Kuah Banjir: A Flavor Explosion
A unique aspect of dining at Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu is the "kuah banjir" (flooded gravy) style of serving. Your plate of rice is generously doused with a mix of different curries, creating a symphony of flavors that is both complex and satisfying. This method not only enhances the taste but also ensures that every bite is packed with a burst of spices and aromas.

Food was great, one of the best nasi kandar around here. Hygiene was rather lacking as the smell of raw chicken was overpowering. However, service was a bit shady. To be fair, it could all be coincidental.
When ordering, the worker purposely chose and gave us the smallest available chicken for both of us (he actually went digging to give us the drumstick). Nothing wrong with that as we didn't specify which part we wanted.
When ordering drink, they accidentally gave us double of what we ordered and quickly left. We didn't even realise until it was too late and just decided to drink it all. (They obviously added double to the bill).
The final straw was when during payment, the cashier "accidentally" charged us extra. When we noticed this, we immediately called it out, where the cashier proceeded to laugh and said "sorry sorry" and charged us the correct amount.
The final part was definitely suspicious as the cashier probably counts and charges the same thing everyday. Furthermore, having 3 potential shady occurrence happen during a single meal time was odd indeed.
Overall, food was delicious but just beware if you're coming to visit for...
