Seeing that it's a long standing shop, I wrongly presumed that it should be good, and also with so many good reviews. One visit and that'd be my last too.
We both ordered the Spinalis Steak, medium rare being cooked till medium, medium being cooked till medium well. I had one h*ck of a time chewing my food. To rub it in, the meat was over marinated towards the saltish side, and when informed, the response was simply "oh, yes ah ?"
Ordered the "meal set" that comes with a soup-of-the-day and "upside down ice-cream".
The soup was alright, but the croutons were rancid. Called the waitress over and told about the rancid croutons, and much to our dismay, her reaction was "oh, ok". With no offer to right the wrong or even for the least, apologize.
In the mid of the meal, my friend couldn't take it no more, and waved her over to ask if she has informed the kitchen of the rancid croutons, she said yes. And when pressed further to ask if the management offer any kind of remedy, she again said yes, and that they asked "if we wanted" we could ask to change for a new soup. I was utterly shocked, for she then said, do you want a new soup? We were already in the midst of the steak, and only after we enquire, she posted this query???
The upside down ice-cream.i must say, the best of the entire meal. The ice cream, normal vanilla ice cream, some chocolate sauce and grounded peanut sprinkles. The cone, was at least not rancid, but a very very strong soy bean smell.
Come the time of the bill, the waitress rang up a total of 224. Shocked by the total, as was told ( written clearly on the menu ) that the steak was 100 each, and if to make it a set meal, to add 10. Also written as they would not be any more surcharge on top of the price shown. So I had her calculate it again and she still said it's correct. Left with no other choice, I had to ran her through the calculation digit by digit, like teaching a primary school kid, only then she realised the total was wrong. Only then she called over the presumably boss lady who then rectified the mistake immediately and gave the correct total.
I have NEVER been this dismayed at any restaurant ever. This time, primarily by the joint's crisis management skills, safe to say, ZERO! To the very very minimum, not a single word of sorry, when informed of the problem with the food served.
I don't know if the oh-so-talked about Laotian laksa is really of any good, but I can't bring myself or anybody else in that matter to "try" again in this joint. Utter disappointment!! Hence the not-even-one star...

Big piece of drumstick spread into a fillet shape.
A lot of brown sauce provided, it was creamy, delicious and satisfying.
FOOD : Non-Halal LOCATION : Fettes (Prima Tanjung) CHOICE : Good TASTE : Good PRICE : Satisfactory AVG.VALUE: RM20.00 - 110.00 per plate / set (1 set of soup, ice-cream, & corn-fed ribeye = RM110)
This time we took the Nachos, Pasta Pesto, Spaghetti Marinara, and Chilli Lime Sauce Barramundi.
The Pasta Pesto was good but the other was too wet or drenched became too soggy.
The Nachos Cheese was superb but limited salsa sauce which made some nachos without salsa sauce. The restaurant should have given some more sauce in a bowl for extra dipping.
The Spicy Lime Barramundi is with a deep fried Barramundi fish then cover with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce (most probably with Maepranom Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce). The fish is fresh but what a waste to be deep fried and drenched with a simple thai sauce.
The Ice-Cream was cute, pretty and fashionable. It wore an inverted cone like a hat which made them look cute. Overall it taste good, coupled with a tinge of chocolate syrup and some...
Read moreI recently visited No Eyed Deer in Penang, a well-known café-style restaurant that has been around for some time. The environment is cozy and has a casual feel, making it a comfortable spot to dine with family or friends.
The food here is generally nice, with a menu that focuses on traditional Western-style dishes. The flavors are decent, but nothing particularly unique or out of the ordinary. If you enjoy classic Western food without too many twists, then this place does deliver on that front.
However, one downside is the pricing compared to the portion sizes. The dishes are on the higher side in terms of price, but the serving size feels a bit small for what you pay. For the same price range, there are other restaurants in Penang offering larger portions or more creative takes on similar dishes.
That being said, the quality of the food is still consistent, and the taste is pleasant enough. It’s the kind of place you can go to for a straightforward meal, but it may not leave a lasting impression.
Overall, No Eyed Deer is good for a casual meal if you don’t mind paying a little extra for the environment and the...
