I was a regular at this cafe. They have good coffee and pastries.
But I had an extremely unpleasant incident here that honestly left me traumatised. Their toilets upstairs are quite shabby, equipped with nothing but a plastic lock. As I done enjoying my meal, i made the mistake of going upstairs to use said toilet. While i was still using the toilet, I heard commotion outside as a couple came up as well, laughing and joking. Next thing I know, I see the door being pried open, no knocking, no asking. I still remember clearly, the plastic lock springing open the first time she pulled and, despite me shouting, the second time, it broke. and directly in my field of vision, a middle aged man, her husband presumably. He quickly dodged away. This incident happened weeks ago, yet i still felt deeply traumatised by it. Every time i went to a toilet, even at home i felt unknown rage. I couldnt understand why this woman dont have any common sense to not open a closed door, or to stop forcing it when she felt the resistant of the weak lock. When i went out the toilet she is apologising. tho i do not like to forgive her, i do know that it's a very unfortunate mistake, and i hope she stop doing that. But It doesnt in any way take away my trauma. Somemore, when I went downstairs and informed the waitress what had happened, the first thing she ask me is whether i had locked the door, despite me telling her that the lock is already wobbly. That did not help with my anger either. Nonetheless it's not the waitress job scope to maintain the establishment. I hope the owner can change the locks and maybe add a holder so maybe the next person that unfortunately experienced this can at least pull from the inside Safe to say i will not...
Read moreI don't usually do a write up as it takes a lot of effort. But once in a long while, you come across an exceptional place and credit has to be given where it is due.
The Maker croissants are lightly sweetened, flaky crumbly with a shiny glaze. You can have them on their own as purists would or, as I do, with strawberry jam made on the premises (Fresh strawberries are fermented and made into jam. The jam has a delicate sweetness with a tangy flavour which goes very well with the croissant) and French butter sprinkled with seasalt flakes.
Today, I also tried the scone. It's served with the tangy Strawberry jam and light dollop of cream. Save that it wasn't served with a thick heavy clotted cream, the scone on it's own was up there.
The Maker is air conditioned. You are in a minimalist airy space with jazz in the background. The atmosphere is unhurried and welcoming. What I like most about the Maker is the fact that you can order (and pay) for as much high quality butter and strawberry jam as you like and not be judged for it lol. Most "famous" cafes or patisseries serve croissants with poor quality butter and jam or no butter and jam at all.
The croissant, jam and butter here is 8.5 out of 10 (8.5 because I've not been to France lately and I'm allowing leeway for better ones there!)
The Maker is run by Loon, a young Penangite who is passionate about Viennoiserie, hence the great croissants although other pastries are also served. Loon has worked in the pastry kitchen of the Kuala Lumpur Westin and has attended master classes on Viennoiserie and pastries.
This is not a paid write up and I didn't know Loon before meeting and asking him his background. I hope you enjoy the Maker as...
