Of all the interesting Clan Jetties, the Lee Clan is by far the prettiest and most relaxed. Most of the 24 homes are still inhabited. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Clan Jetties are the product of land scarcity and colonial land policies which pushed poorer immigrants to the water’s edge, where they ingeniously built homes on stilts above tidal zones.
This improvisation created a unique urban waterfront settlement pattern distinct from inland shophouses reflecting the working-class struggles of early Chinese immigrants who could not afford townhouses.
Their precarious, semi-legal status (many had no land titles, since the homes were over water) also reflects the marginalization of early port workers. Today, the Clan Jetties stand as one of the last bastions of traditional communal waterfront living in Penang and are noted not only for architecture but for intangible heritage — the living traditions, kinship networks, and cultural continuity they embody.
