Of all the interesting Clan Jetties, the Lee Clan is by far the prettiest and most relaxed. Most of the 24 homes are still inhabited. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Clan Jetties are the product of land scarcity and colonial land policies which pushed poorer immigrants to the water’s edge, where they ingeniously built homes on stilts above tidal zones.

This improvisation created a unique urban waterfront settlement pattern distinct from inland shophouses reflecting the working-class struggles of early Chinese immigrants who could not afford townhouses.

Their precarious, semi-legal status (many had no land titles, since the homes were over water) also reflects the marginalization of early port workers. Today, the Clan Jetties stand as one of the last bastions of traditional communal waterfront living in Penang and are noted not only for architecture but for intangible heritage — the living traditions, kinship networks, and cultural continuity they embody.

The time is ripe for an interpretative...

Lee Jetty in George Town, Penang, is a fascinating place to visit if you want to experience the unique heritage and charm of the famous Clan Jetties. Walking through the narrow wooden walkways lined with traditional houses feels like stepping back in time, while the colorful lanterns and decorative arches add a festive touch, especially in the evening. The view over the water at sunset is peaceful and very photogenic, making it perfect for travelers who love capturing authentic Penang moments. There are also small shops and stalls where you can enjoy local snacks or buy souvenirs, adding to the lively atmosphere. Lee Jetty is not only a tourist spot but also a living community, so it’s important to be respectful while exploring. If you’re visiting George Town, this heritage site is a must-see for culture, history, and beautiful...

This is one of a series of jetties that are named using Chinese surnames. Apparently, in the old days China migrants to South East Asia like to stick together according to their China home village or surnames. They formed clans and do business by hiring own clan people. The Lee jetty is one of the more elaborated one , but don’t stop just there. Visit the rest which are just next to each others. Suggest go on weekday evening when it’s not so hot. The sunset view is...
