A gem of Penang heritage. This a an ancestral temple for 潮州Chao Zhou clans of Guangdong Province of China. These clans form a great number of Chinese diaspora to Vietnam, Thailand and the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. Their dialect spoken is very similar to the dialect spoken in Taiwan. The temple was renovated recently and was one of the few receiving a reward of restoration excellence from UNESCO. The peaceful vibe exudes in the temple presents another dimension of bustling George Town. The architecture has all the extravagant figurines, mythical creatures, exemplary high timber doors with colonial period latch, roof ceilings painted in great hues and granite slab flooring in the main compound besides the old era tiles in the hall. The deity Xuan Tian Shang Did (玄天上帝) is prayed right in the main hall. A very common deity prayed in Taoism. The deity always has a turtle under his right foot and a snake under his left foot.
