Was on a random lookout for good steak places in JB to have a good piece of steak and managed to find Fat Butchery in the vicinity.
It was a quaint building photo I saw on GoogleMaps but decided to a take a chance and I was totally thankfully I came here!
This place is sort of hidden away in the older district and pretty close to KSL and Holiday Plaza.
We walked in to a semi-lit place and was guided by the friendly owner on how to choose the meats. The selections were pretty wide and prices seemed reasonable.
After the order was made, we were seated and because this seems like a very out-of-the-way place, we had mostly the place to ourselves.
There was one options of a side, either a salad or fries. Since I was there in a small group, we ordered different slices of meats and took both the salad and fries mixed options.
The salad was well blended with the dressing and the portion was decent, fries were crispy, light and simple.
When the steaks respectively came, my first honest thought was “Overall, it looks a little simple and may not be enough to eat..”. However, after first bite of my steak, I was pretty blown away by how well it was simply made and juicy-ly flavorful my meat was!
Took my time to finish it and honestly, everyone enjoyed their meats thoroughly and were filled just nice!
Will definitely come back here again with friends as this a very quiet place and it is indeed one of the best steaks I have had in JB!
PS. If you do want wines to pair with your good steak, there is apparently a private “Tasting Lab” just right upstairs by which you can order a good bottle to share with your meats! But do check ahead if they are open before assuming the wines are there, as sadly, Fat Butchery doesn’t have much drinks selection in their fridge. Be mindful that they are closed on...
Read moreVisited The Fat Butchery on a quiet Wednesday afternoon and surprisingly, we were the only customers there. It made for a calm and relaxed dining experience. One of the highlights was being able to choose our own cut of meat, and they cooked it for us at no extra charge – which is a pretty good deal (though it might already be factored into the price).
The meal came with a complimentary bowl of salad, which was decent and a nice touch to balance out the meat-heavy plate.
In terms of pricing, it’s much cheaper than your usual steakhouse, which makes it an attractive option for a casual steak fix. That said, I did feel the steak could have been cooked better – it wasn’t bad, but there’s room for improvement in terms of technique or doneness.
One thing that stood out was the price of the bottled drinks – I got a Bundaberg and it was noticeably more expensive than what you'd find at 7-Eleven, which felt a little steep.
Overall, it’s a good spot if you’re looking for a decent plate of steak at an affordable price. I’d consider coming back, especially if I’m in the area and craving something meaty without...
Read moreFat Butchery in JB is a hidden gem for anyone who appreciates well-cooked, no-nonsense food. It’s not a fancy place, but the quality is top-notch where it counts — on the plate.
I had the ribeye, and it was excellent — juicy, flavourful, and served simply with sea salt and mustard. No gimmicks, just solid execution. The fries were cooked in beef tallow, which gave them an extra layer of richness, and the side greens were organic — a nice touch you don’t usually expect at this price point.
What really impressed me was the seafood. My mum, who usually avoids red meat, had the cod fish and scallops and genuinely enjoyed them. The cod was fresh and tender, and the scallops were sweet and seared perfectly. It’s not often you find a steakhouse that nails seafood too.
Service was efficient, and the whole experience was relaxed and unpretentious. It’s the kind of place you go to for real food — not decor or hype.
Great value, great food — definitely worth a visit if...
