Hiritsu Coffee Roastery – Hidden gem in JB with quality coffee that you will revisit for!
If you're café-hopping around Johor Bahru, be sure to make a visit to Hiritsu Coffee Roastery, a minimalist industrial-style café tucked away in Taman Melodies — just a 10-minute walk from KSL Mall and an 8 to 20-minute drive from the customs (depending on traffic conditions).
Quiet, cosy, and subtly charming, Hiritsu isn’t here to impress with frills. Instead, it offers thoughtful coffee and a relaxing space to pause and breathe.
Their house-roasted coffee takes centre stage, and you’ll find a handful of quirky drinks under the Barista Qi Qi’s Special Menu, alongside rustic bakes and financiers in rotating flavours.
Mocha Lover (RM16) A layered experience featuring house blend coffee, 70.4% chocolate, milk, and a generous flossy milk foam top. I followed the barista’s tip: take a first sip through the foam — sweet and pillowy — then stir it all together. What follows is a luxuriously smooth mocha with bittersweet coffee, deep cocoa and velvety milk. It’s super comforting with the robust and intense cocoa flavour.
QiQi Dirty Yerr (RM16) From Barista QiQi’s dpecial menu comes this cold, citrusy blend of homemade orange cocoa sauce, special milk and house blend espresso. Think Van Houten orange chocolate meets espresso – the zesty tang of citrus hits first, followed by creamy cocoa and coffee. The special milk was extra thick and silky, giving it a dessert-like texture. It’s really refreshing and worth a try if you enjoy citrus-choco pairings.
Pumpkin Molasses Sugar Pound Cake (RM15) This dense loaf cake surprised me with actual pumpkin chunks and a smooth cream cheese swirl inside. The molasses gave it an earthy taste without being overly sweet. I loved the flavour profile, but the edges were noticeably dry — a touch more moisture and softness would elevate this bake.
Hiritsu also offers matcha, sea salt choco, and tie guan yin financiers as well as Matcha and Tiramisu Croffles. Their matcha latte uses Niko Neko’s matcha!

Read moreI finished my breakfast nearby and decided to check out this place for some drinks and dessert. I heard the coffee here is pretty good and famous. Visited pretty early as they just opened for business less than 30 minutes ago. There weren't many customers, just 2 tables were occupied. Had a look at the menu and already had the desserts in mind, but went to the counter while ordering and asked the staff to recommend something that is non-coffee beverage to drink. Out of the 2 drinks that was recommended, I picked one and ordered the desserts. The card reader wasn't ready yet so was told to pay only after the meal. Waited quite a while for the food and drinks to be ready. First had the shaddock gathered tea. Didn't know what was that just knew it was yuzu flavoured tea drink but there was a thick layer which I supposed was cheese foam on the top. Tasted not bad and was even better when mixed together. The matcha financier looked pretty interesting as it looked like an egg tart. The matcha was pretty thick and good and I loved it. It was heated up slightly I presume because when I cut the tart up, the matcha was actually gluey and flowing slowly onto the plate. The last was the dessert which was recommended, the bring me go croffle. I thought the croffle was hot and crispy and tasted good but the ingredients didn't actually gel the dish together. It tasted deconstructed as everything tasted a bit standalone. Quite a nice place to chill. Not sure if I will come back and try the breakfast dishes again but the drinks and the pastries are definitely worth...

The space is small but very cosy, with a minimalist setup that gives it a relaxed, welcoming charm. It is the kind of place where you can step away from the bustle outside and just enjoy a quiet pocket of calm.
The coffee here is excellent. You can tell that they really care about their beans and roasting process, as every cup comes out smooth, aromatic, and well-balanced. I had a simple latte, and it was one of the better ones I’ve had in the area—rich in flavour without being overpowering. For coffee lovers, it definitely hits the spot.
What I enjoyed most was the overall vibe of the café. It is peaceful and unpretentious, with just the right touch of warmth that makes you want to linger a bit longer. Whether you’re here to read, do a little work, or just relax, Hiritsu provides the kind of environment that makes you feel at ease.
All in all, Hiritsu Coffee Roastery is a hidden gem if you are looking for quality coffee and a chill atmosphere. It may not be the biggest café around, but it more than makes up for it with character, service, and great coffee. I will definitely return the next time I’m...
