Unbeknownst to all of you, I have a very good friend whom I am proud to call my brother in the southern state of Johor. We went to the same college, studied in the same foundation program before he went his separate way to Wellington while I on the other hand, headed to Dunedin in New Zealand.
We still keep in touch even after we graduated - he went back to his hometown in JB to kick-start his career and worked his way up the industry. He is now certified auditor with his own firm. No matter how busy he is, he will try to make some time to entertain me whenever I'm in town, as long as he's around. So this restaurant is a family friend of his, and now he's handling their accounts.
We just blindly followed him into the restaurant and he ordered some of the dishes for us, with a bottle of Cordon Bleu to keep us entertained while waiting. ◾Steamed fish - embarrassed to say this but I'd forgotten the type of fish but what I remember was that the fish was very fresh and steamed to perfection. ◾Deep fried chicken leg - by far my favourite dish of the night. The chicken leg was actually braised first before deep fried, resulting in the explosion of flavours inside the mouth. I think that we had 2 servings that evening ◾Stir fried asparagus with prawns - sweet asparagus plus sweet prawns.. great combinations. ◾Fried kuey teow - this wasn't planned.. but we were already quite high high by then (Cordon Bleu) and one of us said "I'm still feeling hungry" so my friend quickly ordered this char kuey teow. I must say that the CKT was very good - packed with the essential wok hei, the cockles were cooked just right... For someone who try to avoid eating carb, u found myself breaking the rules again.. sigh!!
This is a well established restaurant that has been in business for many many years. The service was attentive - maybe because my friend was around - and we ended the...
Read moreTypical Chinese seafood/tzechar place in JB that's popular with Singaporeans and locals alike. Dishes were all really flavourful and pretty delicious EXCEPT for the yam ring/basket (佛钵飘香), which was a massive disappointment. It tasted as though it had been pulled straight from the deep freezer (where it has been stored away for the past year or longer) and thrown directly into the deep fat fryer. Every single component of the yam ring - from the fried yam to the pork pieces, cashew nuts and assorted chopped vegetables in it - was mushy despite the obvious oil-fried taste. The texture was exacerbated by the lack of flavour - none at all except for the fryer oil. That was particularly appalling since all the other 7 dishes we had were really enjoyable!
Service was average - nothing to shout about. The staff were efficient but indifferent in their attitudes. Not a problem for us since this is clearly a casual eatery and we are pretty chill diners. Just a special mention to the female waitstaff (an older lady aka auntie) who kindly served another plate of crackers (which are always chargeable in such Chinese eateries) which my toddler nephew was relishing - on the house. It's a small gesture, but goodwill should always be appreciated.
On the whole, we will return for a nice tzechar meal in future - but will steer clear of the yam...
Read moreSecond time visited this restaurant. Good quality of Chinese Food. The Claypot Pork Liver is a must try. Salted Steam Chicken was tender and juicy which goes very well with the Chilli & Ginger sauce provided. Char Kway Teow with Cockles was good with “char” taste. Total cost was about RM99 for two of us plus a pot of chrysanthemum tea which is refillable. It’s better to come here in a big group than just two person since their portion is quite big especially the Salted Steamed Chicken was half a chicken which is the smallest portion. Also, more people allow to order more variety of dishes since there are more people to share the food. We are somehow satisfied with the quality of the food despite it is relatively pricey as compared to other places. Last but not least, the servers are rather quite intimidating as they are pushy, impatient while taking order and clumsy while serving. One of the servers broke the glass as she cleared the table and the other spilled over the gravy as she stir the Claypot Liver for us. Also, we noticed that another server use the table cloth laid over the table to wipe her hands twice. Hope they improve the service upon our return...
