Signature Wantan Mee (Original, Dry, Small) = RM9.00 SST Tax = RM0.55
This is a 24 Hours Eatery that at first look, kindda looked more like a Tze Char Restaurant than a WTM stall especially with their Huge Open Kitchen. They not only sell WTM here as I could see they also offer some Dim Sums too. There weren't much people on a Friday Morning when I was there and the Staffs mostly comprised of Foreigners. They're Friendly but mostly keep to themselves.
No one will come up to you to take your order when you take your Seat. You're supposed go up to the Counter, choose what you want, pay for it and it will be sent to you. Slightly Different Ordering Procedure compared to most other Eateries in JB. It took about 2 Mins for the Dish to be served up.
Signature Wantan Mee (Original, Dry, Small) = RM9.00
The First Thing that caught my Eye was the Generous Amounts of Wantan in the Soup! Even for the Small Bowl I ordered, there are 7 Pieces of them! This is Way more Wantans than the number of Wantans we get with the WTM we buy in Singapore.
The Wantan Skin is Silky Soft and the Meat Filling within is Juicy with a Slight Salty Bite. These are the Standard Small Baby Wantans, not Hong Kong Style of Big Chonky Boys though. Still, they're not bad and I'd rate these as Above Average.
The Soup itself Smells and Tastes Very Peppery. Its so Peppery, it completely takes over the Taste Profile of the Soup itself. If you are someone who enjoys Very Peppery Soup, you'll like this. Personally I felt its perhaps a Tad Too Peppery for me. Eating the Wanton with the Soup helps dampens the Pepperiness abit.
Amount of Char Siew are Acceptable for what it is, and they are Cut in the Standard Thin Slivers as expected. Despite how Dry they looked, they're surprisingly Not Dry at all and actually have Abit of Tender Bite. They also have a Sharply Salty Sweet Taste that pairs nicely with the Meat. Not Bad Char Siew Quality for a WTM.
The "Original" Non-Spicy Noodles I ordered is actually Scallion Oil Noodles 葱油面. Its Not Super QQ but does have a Nice Bouncy Bite. Amount of Noodles is Acceptable for the Price and the Scallion Oil Taste is Neither Too Strong nor Too Bland but maintains a Nice Balance.
That said, because Scallion Oil is used, it makes the Noodles Very Oily. This is a Very Oily Plate of Noodles. Seldom see 葱油面 being used in a Wantan Mee so this was an Interesting Choice. Perhaps this is the Reason why they made the Soup so Peppery, as it is probably used as a Counter to Dampen the Oiliness of the Noodles. 一口面, 一口云吞, 一口汤.
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At a Total Combined Price of RM9.55 (S$2.80), I feel this is Worth the Money simply because of the Generous Amounts of Wantan they give even for the Smallest Bowl I ordered. There is just no way you can get this many Wantans in Singapore. The Wantans themselves are also Competently Made and tasted Nice.
The Quality of the Char Siew also surprised me with how Tender they tasted despite looking Dry. The Noodles however I felt were Too Oily. In one of my Photos, you can see how much Oil there was lingering on the Plate even after I finished the Meal.
If you like 葱油面, you will probably like this. But if you prefer more Saucy WTM type of Noodles Taste, you might find this to be abit out of your Comfort Zone.
Ultimately, is this really one of the Best WTM in JB? Personally, I'm not sure. Culinary Wise, I thought it was an Interesting Interpretation of this Classic Dish using 葱油面. I can recommend to give this to try (if you haven't already). Just the Generous Amounts of Wantans is already worth the Price of Entry here.

Read moreI recently revisited Restoran Ah Piaw, a place that once held a special place in my heart due to its nostalgic charm and fantastic food. Unfortunately, my latest experience at the restaurant has left me feeling disheartened, as both the service and food quality have fallen well below their previous standards.
In the past, Restoran Ah Piaw was known for its attentive and efficient service, but this time around, I found the staff to be inattentive and slow. It took a considerable amount of time for our orders to be taken and even longer for the food to arrive. The staff seemed disorganized and overwhelmed, which negatively impacted our dining experience.
The decline in food quality was equally disappointing. The dishes that once delighted my taste buds now tasted bland and uninspired. The presentation, too, left much to be desired. It seems that the magic that once characterized Restoran Ah Piaw has been lost, leaving behind a hollow shell of its former glory.
I truly hope that the management of Restoran Ah Piaw will take the necessary steps to restore the restaurant to its previous high standards of service and food quality. Until then, I am hesitant to return or recommend this establishment to others. It is always disheartening to see a once-beloved dining spot lose its charm, but I remain hopeful that Restoran Ah Piaw will bounce back and rekindle the nostalgia that once made...
