Dinner at Gerai Makanan Pelangi was pleasant. It was a last minute idea as we had passed here many times but never once tried it.
Arrived about 8pm, ordered black pepper pork, kum heong lala and a chye-sim veg with a lime drink.
The pork was nice, very intense flavour and sightly on the saltish side. Black pepper was generous...
The lala was a also nice but this batch of clams seemed to be extremely small. The meat within was so tiny you couldn't taste the clam at all. Gave this feedback to them, and surprisingly, I was given a small discount! Very sincere of them to maintain a certain level of trust and quality in their offerings.
Price wise, very reasonable. To begin with, the place wasn't the most appealing place to have dinner so I'm guessing the rental would have been quite low. But that said, this is exactly how you would feel right at home in Malaysia eating in such surroundings.
Parking was a breeze, ample place to park around the area.
Service was also nice as the lady was friendly and spoke to us in a very engaging way. Food also came quite soon even though there was quite a good crowd during that time.
I'm sure we will eat there again.... although she said they were moving out fur 6 months due to a major revamp...
Read more1.5 stars overall. Food tastes were at best average. Prices expensive and doesn’t give me any of the JB good value feeling.
Ordered the crowd-favorite Kulurou but other than it being crispy, meat quality and tastes weren’t too impressive. The staff here uses primarily Bahasa, they don’t speak much English, maybe passable Chinese if you say the dish name correctly. So service is a big miss. Environment is not much different from a street side, except not that close to the drains so it’s alright in that sense. If it’s a windless night, then expect it to be stuffy cos fans are few. Place is also rather dimly lit. Perhaps most practical to those needing to park their luxury car next to where they eat to watch very closely. My first and last...
Read moreProbably the worst zi char I have ever eaten! Most dishes were very salty and oily. Taste was very off the mark. It’s as though the chef did not taste his own cooking before serving.
Cai por fish 🫲 Reasonably good but very salty.
Sambal kankong 👎 Very salty. Lacks rempah.
Sweet and sour pork 👎 Unbalanced taste - salty and sour but chef forgot the sweet element. Mostly flour. Very little pork.
Kam hiong clams 👎 Tasted mostly of salted fermented bean paste. Clams were super tiny and shrunk even more because they were over cooked.
Indonesian prawns 👎 Very thick and choking gravy. As though they added powdered milk. No santan aroma. Prawn meat was tasteless and...
