Review of The Starter Café @ Johor Bahru (near Taman Pelangi)
Tucked slightly away from the busy streets of Taman Pelangi, The Starter Café offers a quiet spot for breakfast and brunch. We visited on a calm morning to try out their food, and if you’re a fan of sourdough bread, this café might catch your interest—they even offer takeaway sourdough loaves.
Their menu features a variety of breakfast platters and spiral dough pizzas. We tried a few of their recommended platters: Scrambled Egg Platter – fairly standard, and since most platters already come with scrambled eggs, this one felt skippable. Hearty Breakfast Platter – the sourdough paired with a wholesome salad topped with grains was quite enjoyable. Meat & Meat Platter – the highlight for me, especially the cranberry chicken salad and their specialty bread.
On the downside, the chicken sausages tasted like the cheaper variety, and the butter portions were too small considering the generous amount of bread served.
Overall, we had a filling and satisfying breakfast, thanks to the chef’s effort. But to be honest, nothing stood out strongly enough to make me want to return—especially with so many other cafés in Johor Bahru offering better settings and more memorable breakfast...
Read moreFor folks in JB who are not used to eating Sourdough pastries, just ask our KL-lites and Singaporean health-conscious friends/relatives and you will know sourdough is THE BREAD for diabetic and carb-conscious individuals. And this is the place to eat and buy them! Run and operated by a group of young, ambitious and talented guys and gals, i gotta hand it to them on their courage to invest in machines(ovens) and their patience and passion in getting up the so-hard-to-raise starter for the sourdough bread. Their menu is limited, but whatever that comes to mind being healthy-conscious eating(the ingredients are not cheap!), they are trying their best. Try their breakfast sets, croissant, focaccia bread and bagels - all home made and served warmed. Prices are negligible- people in KL would buy everything off their shelves if they see them. A matter of taste, - sourdough isn't your everyday Season, Lavender or SDS forte, but in the long run toast to good health, this is the place to hang out and have your...
Read moreHighly would not recommend this place. I was very much mislead by the previous reviews.
Great service because they offered to do a takeaway for me of half the portion of sourdough toast that came with the mushroom soup as I asked for lesser toast. The toast was disappointing to me. Had unmelted cube of unidentified cheese and berries in them. Gross combination for me.
Had the cream cheese smoke salmon bagel. Felt like a scam as there was so much egg mayo and none of the cream cheese. Instead of cream cheese it was slap with mayonnaise. Lots of it. Salad dressing felt like some thousand island or a salad dressing from a supermarket bottle. If I wanted to pay that amount for something I could have made myself at home I would have done so.
Basically it was a old school feel cafe with home food to me. Definitely not worth the price they are holding themselves at. Cleanliness was a fail for me. Table I sat at had bread crumbs leftover from god knows when as it was a...
