I went there with my family on the Christmas Eve for their special dinner. I was excited to see the dessert section in the entrance area but was so disappointed with the food, service and atmosphere that I wish I could give a zero star. As a Bonvoy Titanium member, I have been to many Westin hotels around the world including Seasonal Tastes restaurants in several locations but this one was by far the worst. They charged almost 300 MYR per person including tax but only things that our family agreed that edible were oyster, cheese and dessert.
Food: overall extremely bad. a few examples.
Wagyu roast: it was labeled as Wagyu but the meet was so tough and lean and it wasn't seasoned and cold as they don't have any heating device. No sauce for this blend beef.
Seafood: only fresh oysters were ok. Some clams and scallops served frozen and I had to remove ice. There were too many flies on the whole fish and I didn't even touch it.
Turkey: again it wasn't seasoned properly and blend and touch. Gravy sauce was watery and disgusting.
Sushi: mostly cheap rolls and only sea eel and salmon sushi but the size of fish on top was tiny.
Indian: I didn't try but my wife told that it's is rare that Indian food untasty but it was bad here.
Service: it was so understaffed. they didn't clear plates and I had to remove them myself each time I come back to my table. Water was poured on glasses before we arrived (warm already) and never refilled.
Atmosphere: they added so many tables outdoor that I couldn't get seated without touching the guests behind. Tough to walk around of course. Loud music by a live band and they were playing music such as Creep which includes a few F words on a Christmas Eve. I asked the manager to lower the volume as music was too loud and terrible but no change.
The hotel has probably sold cheaper packages including the dinner at Seasonal Tastes (as the hotel and restaurants were packed) while charging the ridiculously high price for guests from Singapore (dinner here was more expensive than that of Seasonal Tastes at Westin Singapore). We had to dine here as we arrive at the hotel just before dinner but there are many quality local restaurants nearby that...
Read moreThe variety at the breakfast buffet (even with gluten free options) is good, with freshly squeezed watermelon, orange juices that were great. The nasi lemak with multiple types of sambal you can pick was good as well. The eggs were done ala minute perfectly - runny when requested, but the most stellar station was the roti canai station where the egg and chicken curries were absolutely delicious. There is also a live teh tarik station, and there was a hand pulled noodle station when we were there too. Kids would love the milo milkshakes and donut counter. I don’t usually enjoy hotel breakfasts but this was worth waking up for. We also ordered a dozen chicken satay to have by the pool, and this was really, really delicious - I was tempted to order it again. Service at the restaurant, in fact the whole of Westin Desaru was top notch, staff would greet us politely and check in with us on how we were finding our experience. Will...
Read moreI had an unfortunate experience at the Thai-tastic dinner buffet in September. It was marketed that chefs were specially brought from Thailand to serve a Thai menu and I went to the buffet looking forward to it. However, the Thai dishes were badly done - the phad thais were soaking wet and the beef curry was bland. The non-thai dishes which I assume to be part of the standard buffet menu were very disappointing as well. The salmon in the sushi counter was smoked salmon which was topped with mayo while the mango pomelo dessert tasted like drinking carnation milk out of a can. The buffet was not the most expensive but it was very disappointing for Marriott standards. Much room for...
