When new restaurants open in Kota Bharu, they are often similar to other, already established eateries in town. One thing you can say about Bao Bao is that there really is no place like it in KB. It's good concept--using charcoal bao as the base for a range of Asian-themed sandwiches. And some of the food was quite tasty. The vegetarian banh mi and the chicken rendang were both very flavorful. There is real potential here to be a great place.
However, there were several things about our visit that could be improved. All of the sandwiches we tried were quite dry--not because they were improperly prepared, but simply because none of the ingredients provided enough moisture. So they didn't quite hold together as a truly great sandwich should. The staff were inattentive, and mostly on phones or chatting outside the whole time, so it was actually difficult to order a drink midway through the meal. And the atmosphere of the restaurant felt quite incomplete, as if they were still setting up. Maybe they were--when we went, they had only been open two weeks. But there is no reason to leave clothes drying in the upstairs rooms, where customers can see them, and the fans they had set up downstairs were not enough to keep the place cool in the early evening. Plus, the glimpse I had of the kitchen did not inspire confidence as far as cleanliness goes.
All in all, an interesting place, with great potential and a creative menu, but needs a fair bit of work to earn a solid...
Read moreDecided to give this place a try after my friends hype-ing me about this superb café. This cafe atmosphere is like old skool kinda place. The wall colour is black white and no vibrant color decoration. Really loves the aesthetic of this café. They don't have physical menu, you need to scan the qr code at tables for the menu. Their menu also really nicely done. Displayed the dishes together with customer review so you can get a better insight about the dishes.
I ordered smoked duck bao and 4 pcs pan-fried gyoza (dumplings). THEY BOTH TASTED VERY VERY GOOD ! the dumplings are nicely cooked, juicy and flavorful fillings. Dumplings served with chilli oil which really compliment the dishes. I CAN'T STOP DIPPING MY DUMPLINGS INTO THE CHILLI OIL. IT'S SOO GOOD ❤️❤️❤️ my regrets is not buying the 8 pcs ☹️
Second dish i ordered is the smoked duck bao which is a small black bun with egg, cheese and smoked duck meat 🤤 the second my dish arrive at the table, the aroma of smoked duck tickles my nose buds. REALLY FRAGRAT. i quickly take a piece of meat and eat it just like that and BOOM ! the flavor of the duck mesmerized my tounge. Oh and it is served with crispy curly fries. Guess what ? I DIPPED MY FRIES IN THE DUMPLINGS CHILLI OIL CUZ ITS SO GOOODDDD.
Do you think I'm gonna come here again ? DEFINITELY YES AND GONNA ORDER 8 PCS DUMPLINGS !
Trust me, this place is...
Read moreLove the atmosphere of this house-turned-cafe. It has two levels, and they offer different feel in each. Service is friendly and fast. And they open til late.
Can get the menu at the counter, and they will come to get your order. Can also order directly at the counter.
Ordered the salted egg pasta with chicken katsu. Love the rendition they had, with spicy kick and creaminess. But the sauce was a bit on the sour side this time. If it's sweeter and less sour, that'd be better. Their mushroom danbing (Taiwanese egg pancakes) is so good. Fragrant mushroom, with sweet caramel sauce, all in a hot wrap of omelette pancake.
Tried their experimental menu for drinks. I think it was matcha yuzu. The sourness overpowered the matcha. But it's unique, and like the candied fruit on top. If you like sour, this would be a good drink.
Would definitely...
