Disappointing First Experience with Claypot Rice
We recently visited Foong Lian for my first experience with claypot rice, and unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. While this location wasn’t my first choice for claypot rice, I decided to give it a try.
Food Quality: The claypot rice was less flavorful than I anticipated, making it an underwhelming introduction to the dish. The chicken was slightly undercooked, which is a significant concern. We also tried the stewed wings, but they didn’t stand out either—they were just average and lacked the richness or depth of flavor you’d expect. The beverages were particularly disappointing. Both the passion fruit and lychee drinks were essentially sugar water, with a bit of passion pulp and three lychees added. I cannot recommend these at all.
Service and Atmosphere: The service was friendly enough, but it couldn’t make up for the undercooked chicken. The atmosphere was lively, which added a bit of energy to the experience, but it wasn’t enough to save the meal. Value for Money:
We spent an average of RM66, which I feel could have been better spent elsewhere, given the quality of the food and beverages.
Final Thoughts: Foong Lian left me disappointed. While the service and atmosphere were passable, the food quality was lacking, and I wouldn’t choose this location again for claypot rice. There are likely better options out there to truly...
Read moredoesn't really hit the spot... chicken marination wasn't long enough .. quite tasteless on it inside. but chicken is okay fresh.
most disappointing is the rice doesn't put enough soy to season. after thoroughly mixing it still a lot of noticible white rice not being mixed.
salted fish is delicious but oddly you must order along with the Claypot rice, what I'm saying is you cannot add-on later on. not sure if I understood the reason they gave but nontheless you cannot add on later
the soup is alright but with the price you paid normally it comes with some meat in it. the soup I ordered doesn't has any.
fried foo chok is edible nth worth mention, vege is fresh
the drinks are a little overpriced staggering RM7 for a honey lemon or teh ais ...that's mall cafe price not pudu shoplot price.
operationally they've got rooms of improvement. the qr given to scan are non readable on the table ... they should have opt for better qr ordering solution if they insist to stick with qr method.
im sure they have their own supporters who think they deserved to b recognize as Michelin gourmet but it's quite average for me.
personally I much prefer the 'neighbours' Claypot chicken rice sadly they're...
Read moreScrumptious, heavenly goodness. Foong Lian is a family owned restaurant that specialises in clay pot rice cooked with a meat of your choice. I had the clay pot chicken rice. I also ordered the fried Thai style tofu and the bean sprouts as side dishes. Every mouthful spoke to me of a cook who had a passion for food and a deep love and respect for his customers. From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I felt the love. It was so clean and bright and the food...OMG. The claypot chicken rice came steaming hot and smelled delicious. Mix it all up and take a mouthful. You can taste the lovely blend of flavours in the soft rice from the tender chicken, garlic, shallots, Chinese sausage and salted fish. The bean sprouts were plump and juicy with no roots in sight and had the aroma if crisp bits of garlic and was delightfully seasoned with soy sauce and just a hint of sugar. The tofu was fried to perfection with a crisp golden skin and juicy softness on the inside. This is old style Malaysian food. Food from Malaysia of the 1970s I fondly remember eating. The only problem I had was that I couldn't stop eating until I was bursting full. It definitely deserves its Michelin...
