Hokkaido Seafood ... But not in Japan
Once upon a time, a long way before the age of GPS ie. Waze or Google Map came to the fore; when finding a good restaurant to eat meant book publications, TV shows, blogspot & word-of-mouth; back when I was still in my 20s - not 18 sui pok pok chui - I had come across this restaurant.
It was during a conversation with an acquaintance that he mentioned an awesome seafood restaurant that served awesome fish head curry and located behind Pekeliling Bus Station - I will know because that place was where I always alighted from the bus when I came to KL using Pahang Lin Siong or Transnasional bus during my college years.
Fast forward more than 10 years later, I suddenly had a craving for fish head curry and made my way here, braving the evening traffic and the seemingly scarce parking spots in this area. The restaurant has since expanded, taking over 2 shoplots adjacent to its original corner lot spot.
◾Sweet & sour (spicy) crabs - at RM70 per piece for 400 gram++ crustacean, I'd say price was on the high side per kilogram. However who am I to deny when the son tiba-tiba has craving for it? It turned out to be very good - the gravy had the right consistency in terms of texture and flavour.. it was quite nice with a good degree of spiciness actually to cover the fresh crab meat. Even I couldn't resist scooping the sauce with my spoon. ◾Dried chilly (Kam Heong) bamboo shells - another hit for me because most of the places that I ate this dish were quite watery due to the nature of bamboo clams, but that was not the case here. Dry, spicy and sticky just the way I like it. ◾oyster omelette - not starchy at all with generous amount of plump & juicy oysters given. I know some other places with stingy amount of oysters but let's focus on this restaurant. ◾Singapore fried bee hoon - at RM10 per pax portion, the mee hoon had sufficient flavour and wok hei to it. ◾Boiled cockles - my favourite way to eat cockles but this was my least preferred dish of the evening, as the molluscs were overdone (they boiled it longer than they should). Otherwise it would be perfect! ◾stir fried potato leaves - good.
Note: their chilly sauce is very nice and addictive.
A popular spot for 1 Malaysia to enjoy seafood, it was sad to find out that they don't serve curry fish head anymore because I remember it was one of the best I'd tried. However, the freshness of the seafood and the executions made up for it. Too bad that it's quite far from where I live or I would have come here on...
Read moreHokkaido Seafood (located just opposite AC Hotel KL) is one of the oldest and famous seafood restaurant around KL which has been operational for decades. Also one of the few seafood restaurants that boasts "no pork served". I was very excited to visit the place again but was slightly dissapointed with the food quality. That said the restaurant has a very nice dining ambience (complete with aquariums full of live seafood) and it is very spacious comprising three shoplots. The price range is average depending on what seafood you order many of which are based on seasonal prices.
We ordered the following (see pictures)
Steamed Crab 3 🌟 Definitely wasn't what I was expecting... Taste was bland and the steamed eggs was somewhat tasteless. Strange as I remembered this dish used to be really good.
Steamed Cockeral 3.5🌟 We ordered this dish to be slightly cooked and good if almost raw.. But it came slightly cooked.. But still nice and yummy when paired with the Thai Chilli Sauce.
The Signature Escargots 2🌟 The Escargots was ok..a bit overcooked but the taste is a bit strange.. Didn't work for me here. Very chinese style and didn't taste right.
Seafood Tomyam 4 🌟 This dish was very Malay influenced kind of Tom Yam. Very nice... And the big tiger prawns that came with it was fresh and nice.
Seafood Fried Rice 3🌟 Nothing spectacular, plain Ole fried rice topped with seafood which was actually quiet nice and yummy. I actually prefer fried rice.. Fired up in high temperature.
The overall experience was great as the customer service (including the very nice boss) makes this a nice place to visit especially with family. The restaurant also accepts lost major digital wallets including GrabPay, Touch N Go, etc. However food is really so so only... And I think there are many other seafood restaurants that is...
Read moreA family favourite dinner place that we keep on coming back to over the years ever since my childhood days! I'd say it is one of the best seafood restaurant I've been to and their 'ikan siakap masak tiga rasa & fried butter prawn' is a must-try! Not forgetting, their 'fried man tou/buns' are so delicious when you pair it together with the spicy crab dish!! The food portion is fairly big and the prices are quite reasonable, hence I'd recommend to come here in groups, the bigger the better! The fishes/prawns etc... are always fresh, veges too.
The waiters are very friendly and always there on standby when you need help. Service is quite fast and efficient which I really like about this place. On top of that, their toilet is also very clean.
They do have an air - conditioned room for customers who prefer to sit indoors. Tho parking can get a bit difficult due to peak dinner hours/limited parking spaces but fret not, there are allocated parking crews to help you with the parking.
Overall is an amazing place to have dinner reunions with friends/families and indulge in those delicious...
