Let me start with the good. The beef is really good. I had beef fajitas and the beef was cooked perfectly - tender, flavorful, lovely. Next time I come here I'll order steak instead of Mexican food. Also, their El Presidente margarita is quite tasty with a good combination of sweet and sour and the perfect amount of salt on the rim of the glass. Their mojito is also very impressive - kudos!

However.

This is Mexican food in the Southeast Asian approximation of Mexican food. All the pieces are there - flour tortillas, meat, shredded cheese, guacamole, onions and bell peppers - but together they aren't authentically Mexican. Spicing has something to do with it. Use of cilantro, cumin and garlic would deepen the flavor profiles. The guacamole is slightly sweet, more typical of SE Asian uses of avocado than Mexican. Tabasco is the default hot sauce, although if you keep an eye open they also have a habenero sauce that packs a punch and is much more authentic (more Mexican-y, less Cajun-y).

Fish tacos are good with the above caveats. Tortilla chips are crunchy, taste right and have the proper salt ratio. The house 'salsa' seems like a blend of Tabasco and perhaps tomato sauce? Runny, not chunky like pico-de gallo.

Atmosphere is very nice, definitely makes you think of a tourist cantina along the Mexican border.

So go the Mexican food, just be prepared it isn't going to taste like it does in Mexico or the US Southwest. If you don't have a basis for comparison you'll enjoy it here greatly. But I definitely want to try the...

Las Carretas in Ampang truly delivered a fantastic dining experience! We had the pleasure of indulging in their Chili Verde and steak. The Chili Verde was absolutely delightful—tender beef infused with rich, flavorful spices that melted in our mouths. The steak, while incredibly flavorful, was a tad dry but still thoroughly enjoyable.

However, what set this experience apart was the exceptional service provided by Alfred and Nelson. Their cheerful, warm, and friendly demeanor elevated the entire evening. Alfred’s attentiveness and proactive nature stood out—he even anticipated our need for toothpicks before we could ask! Such impeccable service is rare and truly appreciated.

It’s staff like Alfred and Nelson who transform a good meal into an extraordinary experience. Their dedication and professionalism are the reasons why I would eagerly return to Las Carretas. These team members deserve recognition and bonuses for their stellar work!

this was my first time of dining in here and the crew didn’t failed to amaze me and my husband. greeted us with such warm welcome and gave the best experience there. we ordered based on our liking and not any recommendations. the quesadilla is to die for honestly. the cheese was so rich and it’s just so flavourful. we also had this chicken wing set whereas the chicken were so juicy, crispy and the sauce given was such a good combo. there was also beer promo going on which pretty much made my husband excited. Upon being seated, there’s a complimentary of tortilla chips with tomato dipping sauce.

Parking wise it wasn’t a hassle. we found one quite nearby to the restaurant.

overall this was a good dinner night for us.
