Visited on Mother's Day. My wife and I decided to try Oriental Kopi at the LG level of Mid Valley Megamall, as we noticed the perpetually long queue was shorter than usual. The hype surrounding this Malaysian coffee chain has been significant since its first Selangor outlet opened in Bandar Puteri Puchong prior to early 2022, and the Mid Valley location is known for its queues.
Inside, the ambiance is a comfortable, air-conditioned space with a modern yet traditional interior design and soft old-school Chinese music playing.
We decided to sample their most talked-about items. We ordered the Signature Egg Tarts and the Taro Egg Tarts, a Polo Bun set, and a Mee Siam set. To wash it all down, we had a big glass of their Signature Oriental Kopi.
The Signature Egg Tarts lived up to their reputation. They hold a record for having the thickest crust (6mm or 128 layers), which uses premium French butter. They are baked fresh daily at high temperatures, resulting in an exceptionally crispy and flaky texture. The filling is a copious amount of golden caramelized custard. It's described as fragrant with eggs, tasting sweet but not greasy, crunchy, and flavorful. We found the filling light and not overly creamy. The crust was indeed very flaky and crunchy, almost like a croissant on the side. The Taro Egg Tart is a flavour variation and was listed as a recent product extension.
The Polo Bun is also a signature dish. It's traditionally handmade and baked at high temperature, achieving a golden crispy crust while the base remains soft and fragrant. It came served with slices of butter. You can add honey or condensed milk to enhance the taste, which some prefer with condensed milk.
For mains, the Mee Siam was a recommended noodle dish. The mee hoon was well-cooked and packed with Siamese spices. It came with a perfectly poached egg on top, allowing the gorgeous golden yolk to ooze out and mix with the noodles for a creamy taste. Adding the provided lime juice gives it an extra tangy kick, creating a mix of sweet, savoury, and tangy flavours. Our set included crispy fried chicken thigh, which was described as juicy and perfectly salted, and luscious when paired with the mee siam. One reviewer noted the sambal was mild and not very spicy. Overall, it was found to be decently good and above expectation.
The Signature Oriental Kopi is a must-try. It's brewed in-house using traditional techniques with a blend of premium Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica beans. The beans are roasted at high temperatures for a thick and mellow aroma. Each cup is hand-brewed for an authentic taste. It was indeed aromatic and indulgent.
Regarding price, Oriental Kopi is noted for being rather high compared to typicalKopitiams.
Overall, our experience trying these specific signature items was good. While some reviewers feel the price and queues might not always be worth it for standard kopitiam fare, for this Mother's Day visit with a shorter queue, getting to savour the highly-rated egg tarts, the unique Mee Siam, and the signature coffee made for an...
Read moreIt’s a restaurant being patronised by Singaporeans frequently. So, do expect a long queue during the weekend.
They sell staple local food and drinks like Mee siam, Nasi lemak, Laksa, Kaya butter toasts. BUT, at a premium price. Aside from the staple food, they are notoriously known for their egg tart, but it was sold out during my visit. I would say they are considered PapaRich/OldTown alternatives. With OldTown’s standard has dropped and PapaRich is out of the picture, Oriental Kopi has become the next favourite for people to fix their craving for local delights. However, their choices might be as diverse as PapaRich.
I ordered their kaya butter toast, Nasi lemak, and a cup of roasted white coffee.
The Nasi lemak is not bad but not striking; it has the needed coconut fragrance, but it’s not as rich until you can savour the coconut flavour. The sambal is considered spicy in comparison; the fried chicken is also okay, just slightly oily; the meat wasn’t warm, so it kind of lost its tender texture.
Laksa is also not bad but nothing special that caught my attention. It does have a rich texture; flavour-wise, it’s rather spicy to my tolerance, so I could only taste the spiciness as opposed to a well-balanced mixture of coconut, shrimp, and other ingredients.
Their white roasted coffee is an award winner, but I beg to differ. It is roasted, so I expected a more bitter and smoky taste, and unfortunately, it has none. Regardless, it tastes better than PapaRich. On the other hand, their iced Mocha, that is mixed with local coffee beans (if I remember correctly), is something special; the caffeine taste came out stronger for some reason, and it has a bitterness flavour I sought after. Definitely recommended.
The kaya butter toast is dissatisfying in my opinion. Plus point on using cold butter; butter is soft enough to bite and has a hint of sweetness. But the toasted bread is a disappointment; it was not warm, hard, but not crunchy; I couldn’t bite into it easily; it tasted like pre-toasted bread in general.
My verdict is PapaRich serves better food, Oriental serves better kopi. I would say it is not the restaurant that’s worth queuing more than 30 mins for. So, I would recommend visiting the branch at Johor Jaya, it’s often little or no queue at all.
And also, this restaurant is halal certified, making it a good place to gather with your...
Read moreBe ready to queue as this a new kopitiam in mid valley mall. Or just come at non peak hours like 9-930pm.
I would give a big thumbs up in terms of food taste and decent portion. I have been coming for 3 times in a week to explore their food and it gave me pleasant surprises. I thank God that they open a branch here, coz now I have a new place that serves nice local delicacies!
Their char koay teow and chicken hor fun comes with 2 big prawns (fresh) and decent amount of other toppings, and curry noodle is also served with many, like really many toppings!!! With bad economy in msia now, it's hard to come across restaurants that are this generous, and their food are reasonably priced as well, for a restaurant located in A-mall, I can't imagine how much this kind of food would be priced if it's served in a hotel with same portion, only that their food is much cheaper, or taste quite authentic.
Char koay teow, its hard to find really nice ckt in klang valley, but their ckt reminds me of the one I found in Little penang cafe, with a bit of more "wok hei", and balanced with a hint of spiciness, it would have been close to perfect! You can put a remark to add some spiciness, which I did during my 2nd/3rd visit, quite good.
Curry noodle, apart from generous portion and topping, the essence of nice curry noodle is nice broth in my opinion, neither too thick nor too diluted, which is also a challenge to find in most shopping malls in klang valley. Fortunately, their curry noodle is nice too. Might be a slightly spicy for you if you couldn't take spicy food.
Chicken hor fun, naturally sweet broth with short & fat Beansprout, similar to those found in ipoh, except its even better, and definitely better than the overrated "ah w*Ng chicken hor fun".
Mee siam, I really quite like it, coz it's freshly prepared, and it's not too dry, and always, like ALWAYS sold out if you visit them late for dinner.
Based on the food I have tried this far, their food taste much better if compared to big player like madam kw*n, and cheaper!!!!!!
I haven't tried many other food here. But the only thing negative I have to say is that their signature coffee is quite expensive. It taste as good as those in kopitiam undoubtedly, but just...
