Tucked quietly along one of Ipoh’s busier streets, Chee Wah Coffee Shop is the kind of place you’d likely overlook if you didn’t know what to look for. Unassuming and easy to miss, it sits just off the main hustle and bustle, a true hidden gem waiting to be discovered by curious food lovers.
The menu here is as focused as it gets — only two items are served: lou shu fun (also known as mouse or rat noodles) and chicken wings. But what they lack in variety, they more than make up for in execution.
The lou shu fun is not your typical version. Served in a hotpot with a clear broth (a refreshing change from the usual dark soy-based version), it comes loaded with squid, prawns, and a freshly cracked egg stirred in just before serving. A generous dose of crispy lard adds richness and depth, tying everything together into a dish that’s both comforting and flavorful. It’s hearty without being heavy — a well-balanced bowl that hits the spot.
The real surprise, however, comes from the chicken wings. Perfectly grilled with a deliciously smoky char, they rival — and arguably surpass — the more famous ones at Jalan Alor’s Wong Ah Wah. Juicy, well-seasoned, and addictively moreish, these wings alone are worth the visit.
Drinks are average and limited, but frankly, no one’s coming here for the beverages. Service, on the other hand, is commendable — friendly, fast, and attentive without being...
Read more25 Mar 2025 Back after 10 months, we were initially sad seeing it’s closed on Google map on the 2 days (Tue & Wed) we were in Ipoh. Somehow my spouse found out from Instagram that they would actually be opened on Tue. We were in disbelief but decided check out Chee Wah when we were nearby at Wan Chee Beancurd.
The food remained so good. We had our usual claypot of lao shu fen and 12 chicken wings and 2 beverages. We spent RM68.60 for 2 pax.
Schedule on Google map is inaccurate. They are opened everyday except Wed & Thur or unless they inform on Instagram @cheewahrestaurant
Many stores closed when I returned this time. We also noticed Chee Wah seemed quieter compared to the last time we visited. Hope to visit them again on my next trip.
27 Apr 2024 We were particularly excited for mee tai mak / bee tai mak/ loh shi fun at this old and nostalgic family run store. They only sell 2 food items on their menu. Very smart move. We enjoyed the comfort food. Plain and delicious. The chicken wings are a hit for us always. Love the taste of the marinated wings and the chilli sauce is a must to pair with. Very thankful for the young man who took our order. He was very patience with us. We had 1 pot, 12 wings & 2 herbal tea for 2 pax. Total spent RM67.40. I would visit anytime for this...
Read moreA simple shop house serving two dishes - clay pot noodles and deep fried chicken wings. Sounds simple, right? But the noodles are “rat tail” noodles (so called for their shape) that are not readily served at most places, cooked perfectly al-dente, in a comfy broth with pork balls and two eggs added right when it is brought to the table. The fried garlic bits and some red chili paste added just the right kick. The cumin infused deep-fried wings were served golden brown - crispy skin and tender morsels of juicy meat. A perfect snack at 9:30 pm. The bamboo drink was a great compliment to cool the heat from the two beautiful dishes. Well done Ipoh,...
