Highly encouraged to call them for reservations, no matter if it's weekday or weekend. Food comes out fast upon ordering. Their menu does not list any pricing.
It was our first time here, we're from out of town and were a party of 4, and ordered 4 dishes: Special Deep Fried Pork Knuckle, Indonesian Curry Prawns, Chinese Spinach in Superior Broth, and the Lemongrass Chicken. These seemed to be the highlights from reading other reviews. These 4 dishes plus rice and a pot of hot chinese tea, total bill came out to be RM151, so costs about RM38 per person. They never provided a breakdown of the pricing and no pricing was listed on their menu, but I guess it's a pretty reasonable and seems to be in-line with other reviewers.
The pork knuckle was fatty, came with a mild sauce and we loved the friend mantau buns that came with it. You gotta love the fatty pork if you want to really enjoy this dish. The good thing is it's not greasy/oily for a fried dish and not overly salty either.
Indonesian curry prawns were really really fragrant and tastes great, with a rich curry broth/sauce that is infused with fragrant herbs & spices and lots of coconut milk. Prawns we got were a little small in size and the portion size of the dish we got was also kinda small though, roughly ate only 2-3 prawns per person between 4 of us.
The lemongrass chicken is truly lemongrass infused. I was skeptical about this dish but they were not shy with the amount of lemongrass in it and it's a nice flavor that goes well with the sauce they cooked it in. The chicken pieces we got were pretty boney but not a big deal.
Finally, the chinese spinach in broth was not bad. A lot of spinach in it, cooked with lots of dried prawns (har mai) and garlic, but the century egg they put in seems to be overcooked to the point that it changed the texture to be rough and "berkedut-kedut", and could be better prepared. Taste wise is pretty good for a soup.
Overall, we thought the food was decent and okay-average but nothing extremely mind blowing. My favs were definitely the Indonesian style curry prawns and the lemongrass chicken, both of which I can recommend people order. Service really could be more attentive, we sat in a corner table and was pretty much ignored/overlooked by the staff. Had to wave down their staff many times to get their attention to help us refill hot water for our tea which was quite annoying.
I'm not entirely sure why there's such a long queue & large crowd of people constantly waiting in line for this restaurant. It really wasn't a mind-blowing place either. Maybe we didn't order the right dishes? Or maybe this place is a long time local neighborhood favorite? Or perhaps their reasonable pricing makes it an attractive spot for locals to dine in a comfortable chinese restaurant. (If you want mind-blowing and satisfying but definitely more expensive and slightly different style of a Chinese place, I would recommend another restaurant in town that starts with a "P" and rhymes with "Using" đ)
I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way to dine here but if you're looking for a decent chinese meal at a price point that won't break the bank or happen to want something to eat while you're in the area, or want to entertain a customer with a decent meal in a comfortable air-conditioned restaurant, this is an alright spot to go to.

Read moreSun Marpoh has been around for a long long time. It is one of the popular local restaurants apparently. As I have been away for a long time, this is the first time I came here. Parking is pretty bad here since there werenât many in front of the shop especially on weekends. Booking is necessary if you want to guarantee a table on the weekends. We decided to go for the house specialities such as Lemongrass chicken, house special tofu, pork belly with salted fish and the pork tendon pot. In additional, we also ordered salt and pepper sotong, a steamed Patin fish, stir fried cos lettuce with fermented bean curd. We didnât have to wait for long for the dishes to arrive despite the restaurant was fully packed. I must say this is pretty good for a busy restaurant to have this speedy service. The lemongrass chicken tasted pretty good. The lemongrass aroma is strong and combined with ginger slices. I think the chicken was deep fried before it was mixed into the lemongrass ginger gravy. Although it tasted good, I think the chicken was a bit overcooked hence some parts were tough and dried. This was unlucky for us. I saw good reviews on this dish. The pork belly with salted fish was tasty but a bit too salty for my taste buds. May be the locals prefer it this way. The tofu was presented like a tofu bowl filled with goodies inside. The texture was silky smooth and the sauce blended in was yummy too. This is probably the best dish for the dinner. The Patin fish served with superior soy sauce was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend this dish as well. The salt and pepper sotong was not as crispy as we wished but it still pretty good. The pork tendon pot was served with mushroom in oyster sauce. The tendon was not as soft as I would imagine but still good. The taste was pretty good overall. The veggies fried with fermented bean curds tasted ok too. Overall, the meal was enjoyable despite few disappointments. I would come back again to try other food. I would recommend this place for its good service and reasonably...
Read moreFollowed the google guide and found this highly rated restaurant in Ipoh where locals frequent. We came for dinner and the operation started on the dock at 530pm, with multiple groups of locals flooding in and also doing take away. Everyone in the restaurant are very friendly as well too.
Ordered 5 dishes to share among 3.
Steam fish slices with fried radish dried shrimp. (This is the best dish. Fresh fish slices the garnish touch by fried radish with dried shrimp bring the fish slices to full of umami enjoyment) Pan fried prawns with soya sauce and garlic. (The flavour was great! But got let down by the size of the prawn, smaller than expected. The gravy and fried garlic goes so well with white rice!!! We clear every single drops of the gravy) KaiLan cooked with yellow rice wine. (Loves the yellow rice wine and it pair very well with KaiLan. The only let down is the KaiLan is not properly prepared. The in-chewable skins on the KaiLan is not clear properly) Steam chicken with ginger sauces (Got let down by the dish. Donât get me wrong, the taste and the ginger sauce that pair with it was great! But the chicken was so muscular that it literally canât chew. Well, itâs bearded chicken spices, canât complain too much on it) Rice with chicken dices. (Thought it will be fried rice, but it turns out to have a thick gravy on chicken, covering the egg fried rice. Surprised, but still taste great)
Overall, we paid RM150 for 5 dishes and a pot of tea. Do take note, the menu is without individual price, so if wanted to order some potentially expensive dishes like fish or prawns, you may want to check the price with whosever is taking your order. But I think the price is not bad, considering the fresh food and good...
