Update:
This is an honest review of the famous Kam Heong Coffee Shop located in what we called PJ State. Recently the sonny's practice had shifted to Taman Medan temporarily, and i had the opportunity to explore surrounding areas - by definition within 15 min drive - while waiting for him.
I had gone to eat braised duck at Kam Heong (but that was during dinner) - it marked my first (and second) time coming here for breakfast. Parking is easier on Sundays but to find an empty table therein lies the rub.
◾Fried rice - a viral stall since MCO time and they are still doing brisk business. Plates and plates of fried rice flying off the wok to tables. I like the fact the fried rice was not clumpy and had the wok hei. Few prawns were included as well. No extra egg allowed which was a bummer as I like to break the yolk into the rice and eat. Overall a satisfying dish but is it worth going there just for fried rice? Probably not.. I found Uncle Soon more satisfying to my palate. ◾Chee Cheong Fun - mouth itchy upon seeing selection of 'yong liew' that looked fresh. Picked up a few items, asked to douse with her thin yet flavourful curry and proceed to whack everything + drinking the curry till the last drop. It's good!!! ◾Kuey Teow Th'ng - so she just ordered the soup version without any noodle. The soup packed with flavours and filled with bounch fish balls, fried fish cake slices, pork lard and shredded chicken. Good for those who want something soupy - however compared to the one in PJ Old Town (which I'll write next time), this was not the best I'd tried. ◾Coffee - one of very few that I found OK when it comes to flavour.
A coffee shop where all the hungry souls congregate to fill tummy in the morning.
Battle of Braised Duck Part 2 - Duck & Dessert.. 2-in-1
It was more like a coincidence that we dined at this famous braised duck restaurant. I've been hearing a lot of positive reviews on this age old braised duck restaurant which sometimes sold out by 7-8pm.
Initially we wanted to eat dessert at this YDT Dessert only to realize that Kam Heong Braised Duck is right next to it. The boss even told us that YDT belongs to them and we could order their duck and eat it there. Music to the ears - we ordered a single portion of the duck and the rest was history. I came here twice
◾Braised duck was probably the best that I had so far. Half duck was walloped instantly by everyone. ◾Braised intestines & gizzards had no foul taste to it. I felt like eating Chinese style foie gras. ◾Braised pork trotters could stand tall against the more famous duck as the meat had this fall-off-the-bone texture with same sauce. ◾Sides - salted vegetables had this aromatic flavour from pork lard (must order this!); while braised egg & mushroom were good. ◾They had oil rice, or porridge to...
Read moreOut of it's 44-year history, I have frequented this place for 40 years, and still do, which is probably testament enough as to how good the Teochew-style braised duck is.
Located just next to UOB at State in PJ, the duck rice, which starts from 3:30pm in the afternoon gets to enjoy the availability of parking in the evenings and night, which, during the course of a normal business day, is always an impossibility.
The reason why so many tables and chairs are placed outdoors is due to the lack of space indoors. As there are only about 5 ot 6 tables inside, it's also much cooler to dine alfresco, unless weather takes a bad turn.
The braised duck is one of the best ever, hands down, I have ever tasted. Succulent, juicy and tender duck meat bathed in the sauce which is never too salty, unlike other places, is the highlight. You can also add on other dishes as well, including the duck intestines, braised mushroom, pig trotters, vegetables, braised hard boiled eggs and much more.
There's also double boiled soups now as advertised on a banner just outside the shop, which I didn't notice until as I was walking away.
The stall is large, taking up almost 1/3 or the entire coffee shop. With its large number of helpers, food arrives quickly after ordering. You also have a choice of either rice or porridge to go with your dishes. I've always preferred the rice, since it's very much like the ones from chicken rice stalls. The porridge is also a popular item, topped with some sesame oil and soya sauce.
The pictures attached to my review are from a recent visit with 4 other friends. With all this food, the bill amounted to RM101, only RM20 per pax for the amount that we had, which, we all agreed, was super reasonable.
In the evenings, there's also a satay stall which serves pretty good satay as well. Give...
Read moreThis place is home to one of the famous teochew duck in Malaysia which has been around for over 30+ years as it was around since I was a kid. The duck store only open in evening though so that's the only time we have visited. The cafe is open in the morning too but we have no idea the quality of food in the morning.
The quality of the food over the years has remained fairly consistent and this is the first time I had it in over 3 years. Food quality is very good and the price is very reasonable. We had a quarter duck, 2 rice and 2 braised eggs and cost us RM25 which is considered cheap at this day and age in Malaysia.
However, service has been mediocre at best. The place is very busy and while they had staff to clear plates or deliver food, there are only 2 who can take orders or collect payment making service slow when busy. Both also are not very friendly and even mixed up our order and had the order sent to another table who did not place an order and worse is the 2 folks on that table did not tell them the order was not for them and neither did they eat the food it seems. The 2 guys who can take orders weren't very helpful with this and even suggested we take the food from the table after the found out about the error which we flatly refused! Only after some rather disgruntled looks that they finally took the food back and we had to wait for another 15 to 20 minutes before we got ours.
The teochew duck is very popular to expect a long queue. They make you queue up for takeaways and also to sit in. You dont get a table until it's your turn.
The cafe is also home to a satay store which serves really good satay. Very authentic and delicious and again very reasonably priced.
As with any kopitiam in Malaysia, don't expect super great service but the experience above made the service here...
