Sri Grand City Restaurant & Catering — Restaurant in Petaling Jaya

The food quality is decent and I do admit I like the teh tarik and thosai (the sides too) is good. However, the disappointing bit that puts me off this place is the service. Each time I have been here I had to wait really long for my order to be taken despite signalling to the waiters many times. They asked me to wait which I do not mind if the place is crowded (which it wasn't) but I noticed some of the customers who came later got their order taken earlier than mine. I feel like the waiters prioritize to entertain and take orders from this so called “rich” looking individuals because they expect “tips”. It seems to be quite a well-known habit in this restaurant which I have witnessed and heard from a few relatives. I find this quite surprising for a typical Indian restaurant (yes I know it spacious, air-conditioned) but it is not a five star restaurant. Basically, if you don’t look rich and not open to giving "tips", be prepared to wait for your order to be taken. It's just not me I noticed that a few of them here had similiar experience and they respond with a pathetic standard template. I am definitely boycotting this place and if you have even a slight ounce of value I recommed you should too because it is ridiculous to discriminate your customers and expect "tips". It doesn't matter if it has always been like that, maybe it is time for...

A Delightful Tea Time Experience

I recently visited this charming spot for tea time, and I must say, it didn’t disappoint. The variety of palagarm (kueh and snack items) was impressive, featuring tasty treats like rojak, green peas porridge, appam, noodles, kari pup, and an array of fried snacks. There were plenty of options to choose from, making it a delightful experience.

The place was quite packed, but despite the high turnover, they’ve managed to accommodate enough seating by occupying two shoplots. The atmosphere is lively and inviting, though I did notice a couple of unique rules: No tipping and No laptops allowed—I suppose they want guests to enjoy the food and atmosphere without distractions, perhaps focusing on the experience rather than work or business talks.

My siblings and I thoroughly enjoyed the food, coffee, and, of course, the warm fellowship. We even pack for take away.

For those looking for more than just tea time snacks, lunch items are available as well. The restaurant also sells murukku and Achi Murukku, but we decided to support the friendly blind man selling his goods outside the restaurant, which added a special touch to the day.

Definitely a place I’d recommend for a casual, no-fuss dining experience where the focus is on good food and...

Server's mask are mostly pulled down when working. It's a service by tips place - they judge people who walk in by the potential of getting tips (and if no choice then only someone will serve you). Someone was waiting at the glass door as I was walking to the restaurant while looking, and as I reached for the door, he stepped away. Self seating. It took 20minutes solid for me and another friend to be served a full course of banana leaf rice from the dishes to the rasam. This is because after serving some dishes, our server went to host other people. Apparently other servers, managers will not take over and support each other.

My friend wanted to order drink and our server told us to wait and never came back. We tried asking another passing by server to order and he shouted out to the cashier, and the rest joined in to shout for our server to come take our drink order. Our initial server came and gave us a lecture about the other server only work for tips, and asked for our drink orders and spoke about tips again (asked if we can give him some / at this point we haven't started eating), repeated the wrong drinks order 3 times, nagging about service and tips.

Nothing outstanding about the rice dishes. Tables, glasses and staff uniforms...
