The atmosphere is cozy. There are beautiful, artistic portraits on the wall of Princess Diana, Gandhi, Oprah and Bob Marley. It felt like I was transported to a dive in Berkeley, California! It was Thursday open mic night, and a lovely woman named Pinky was the host/MC. She knew how to make the amateur vocalists and musicians feel at ease and how to engage the audience. When she introduces a performer, she tells a little something about their background, like where they’re from or a detail about their name. This makes the performer feel valued and allows the audience to know a little something about the performer. She welcomed one singer who clearly seemed nervous by handing her the mic and telling her to warm up the mic, and talk as long as she wanted! It was evident that this small gesture helped put the new performer at ease. Then she engages the audience by having them cheer for the performer or turn on the torch lights on their phones and sway with the music.
