A decent, fun place to eat Korean dishes in Kuching. If you particularly enjoy rice meals or Korean-inspired cafes, you'll enjoy Japangi Cafe. Their star dish is the dosirak meal which comes in a cute aluminium lunch box that you can shake to mix all the ingredients together, creating a customized rice meal. You get your choice of protein from egg, beef, chicken or tofu. The rice is high quality sushi rice too. The food arrived surprisingly quick. Took about 12 minutes in total. I was so hungry I ate nearly everything and even then, there was some leftover rice so the portions are generous. I got the tofu dosirak which is the cheapest option (RM 13.60). You get rice, fried bean curd, generous amount of sesame seeds, seaweed, a sunny side up egg and a choice of either potatoes or kimchi as a side. It tasted very delicious and filling. The kimchi is not that spicy and the potatoes are cooked in sweet soy sauce. Tried the tuna mayo kimbap as well. The tuna tasted fresh and was complemented by delicious crunchy vegetables inside the roll. The seaweed was also decently chewy and not too salty.
The cafe's interior design is pretty with an emphasis on warm sunset shades like coral, beige and pink. I liked that there was a unique seating area where customers can take off their shoes and sit on cushions. The atmosphere felt trendy and bright as they had lots of Korean songs playing. Staff were polite and attentive, cleaning the tables quickly after customers leave.
Overall, I felt very satisfied by the presentation, pricing and design of the cafe. Will return to try...
Read moreI recently visited this restaurant after its renovation, and I must say the new environment is quite pleasant. The decor is fresh and modern, which creates a nice ambiance for dining. However, when it comes to the food and overall experience, I was left a bit disappointed.
The meals were okay—not bad, but nothing exceptional. They do offer a kiddy meal, which is a great touch for families, but there's a catch. The kiddy meal comes with bubble milk tea as the default drink option. I personally feel that little kids shouldn’t be drinking milk tea, and I would have much preferred chocolate milk as one of the drink options. When I asked if I could substitute the bubble milk tea with chocolate milk, I was told that it wasn’t possible, which was quite frustrating. It would have been great if chocolate milk could have been offered as an alternative or at least as an add-on option.
Unfortunately, the experience didn’t end there. The staff seemed rather unfriendly and unhelpful, which only added to my dissatisfaction. Given the restaurant’s potential, I hope they can work on improving their customer service and menu flexibility in the future. It’s a shame, because with a few tweaks, this could be a much better...
Read moreShowed up at this Japangi located at the Saradise around 9:25 pm with friends, expecting to grab a quick meal since they clearly list their closing time as 10 pm. But apparently, the staff had already decided to call it a night. They claimed they were ‘closed’—with no explanation, no apology, just a dismissive attitude. Honestly, if the employees here can’t be bothered to serve paying customers during posted hours, they have no business working in customer service. And if management is letting this slide, it shows they don’t care about their customers either. This level of laziness and unprofessionalism is just embarrassing. Either change your hours to match when the staff actually want to work, or hire people who take the job seriously. Unlike Sri Thai Authentic Cuisine in Saradise, which reminded us to order quickly since they’d be closing in 30 minutes, Japangi’s staff just turned us away. At Sri Thai, we appreciated the heads-up and ate quickly to respect their time—that's how you keep customers happy. Japangi should take notes! Totally unprofessional. So, save your time and go to a place where they actually want...
