I rate this restaurant so for several reasons. A culinary fusion of North, East and West Africa in a contemporary manner.
First the ambience. I was greeted with safari-themed ambience as I walked through the doors. I took my time to peruse the wall murals, shaking off the nostalgic feeling of home.....Oh Africa my Africa.
The music changes from Zen serenades during the daytime to African Calypso tunes in the evening, complete with aroma from the Ethopian coffee/charcoal activity. There is ample seating, at the ground level or upper level. The environment is neat and well arranged with good use of space.
The Food. What struck me was the plating, bringing excellent finishing to African meals. There is a wide variety of dishes for every palate, and for vegans and meat lovers.
West Africa- Soups(Egusi, Ogbono, Vegetable). Rice dishes- White rice and stew, Jollof, Fried rice with dodo.
East Africa- Beef/Chicken/Lamb/Fish dishes with rice or Injera. Injera is a flat bread with spongy texture made from Teff flour, traditional recipe of the Ethiopians. There are vegan sauces made from different ingredients like, vegetables, lentils, peas, herbs for vegan diners.
North Africa. Somali sambusas, vegan version and for meat lovers.
Drinks. A whole lot of variety, whether you are a tea lover, or you prefer soft drinks, beer, draft beer, cocktail , fine wine( South African or Italian), spirits or authentic Ethiopian coffee.
I ordered for lamb sauce and Injera. It has just the right amount of spice I wanted, medium spicy and medium hot. Good balance of ingredients with a friendly after taste.
It was a refreshing and authentic African experience. Safari-themed restaurant...
Read moreAfro Deli - I don't know how many times we passed by the place, said we'd stop by, and always went the other way. And then one evening we finally decided to try the Ethiopian cuisine that Afro Deli is famous for. They say that the national dish of Ethiopia is a spicy stew made of beef, chicken, or lamb, but Ethiopian cuisine combines elements of African and Indian cuisine. My humble impression is that they took the best elements. The food is very spicy, so my advice is to choose something that matches your taste with the restaurant team. And I advise you to be honest, because spicy here means spicy. Really spicy. We tried beef and chicken. When I go to Indian, Nepalese, or Pakistani food for the first time, I always say that "I like to feel all the spices, not just the spicy ones." The fact that I have "trained" my palate a bit since arriving in Malta, so they are more tolerant of spicy, was probably the reason why I optimistically said at Afro Deli that I could "go a little spicy". We ordered Doro Alicia wot, which is chicken with spices, and Key wet - beef. Both dishes were served with salad and injera bread, which resembles a spongy pancake - that would be the most realistic description. It turned out that I overestimated my capabilities when it comes to spicy and in the end we ended up switching dishes. The atmosphere is nice, the space is small, everything seems intimate. If you are lucky like us, you will visit Afro Deli when there is a...
Read moreMe and my girlfriend were excited to try Ethiopian food in malta. We tried sambusa at first, it was alright but expensive. I think 2 small sambusa for 5 euro is a bit too much. Food wise we wanted to try meat combo ( ye siga beyeayinet) but waitress told us they don't have that option, so she suggested to take the vegetarian combo. Girl said that instead they will take one food out and replace it with awaze tibs for us, we agreed. After 5 or 10 minutes later another waiter came and told us they don't have awaze tibs and he suggested normal tibs. After waiting like 25 minutes the food arrived. it was so oily and not at the standard of Ethiopian food. speaking about the enjera, the most disgusting and fake enjera we ever tried. I don't think they even used teff for this enjera, it was so bad we had to ask for bread. Unsatisfied we have left the 3/4 of the food untouched, when we came to pay we were told that we have to pay 9 euro more because they added the tibs even tho they didn't inform us at first about this additional fee. overall we think it's doesn't...
