Le Bougainville Restaurant — Restaurant in Flic en Flac

In July 2022 I worked in Mauritius for 3 months and ate at this once fabulous restaurant on average 3 times a week for the entire 3 months. One of the staff Arvin was brilliant and got to know me well and his service was first class. I loved the complimentary hot fried snacks they brought with the drinks, loved the local Mauritian dishes on the menu, the food was freshly cooked and amazing, and the atmosphere was buzzy and vibrant. In 3 months eating there I did not have a single bad experience, the food and service was consistently very good. I returned to Mauritius a few weeks ago in April 2023 and excitedly took a client there for lunch praising it highly on the way there. What a massive disappointment!! Arvin was still there and as always was friendly and helpful. But the menu had changed drastically. The hot fried snacks were stopped and no longer offered. All local dishes were removed from the menu and only international dishes available. We ordered some fried calamari and fried chicken starters but they were frozen packet food and not freshly prepared as they were before. They were horrible. We cancelled our main courses and left. Went there for lunch due to the high reviews on google but the food didn’t really meet up to our expectations.

We had the bougainville salad, whole grilled fish with lemon, beef steak, grilled prawns and kid margherita pizza.

Bougainville salad was alright just a salad nothing can go wrong on it.

Whole grilled fish i feel it was under seasoned and the butter sauce that came with it had no taste. Couldn’t really tell they’d put lemon on it. We had this with side of white rice and lentils.

Beef steak was under seasoned and wasn’t cooked well at all. There was no colour on the outside of the steak it look like they boiled it instead of grilling it. Portion size was small for the prize as well. The green peppercorn sauce tasted more like a creamy sauce.

The grilled prawns was under seasoned as well and could not really taste the garlic butter. Would have preferred to have the garlic butter on the side to dip the prawns in.

The only good thing was the kid pizza.

As for service was alright better to some other places. They offer free garlic bread as a side which was nice.

I came to this restaurant with my family and we reserved before hand. Good thing we did because when we arrived the restaurant was completely full and there was a long line of people waiting to be seated. Upon our arrival, we sat down and we did have to wait quite a while for the waiter to come and give us the menu and receive our drinks order. Once we ordered our food, we had to wait around an hour until we were served. Understanding that the restaurant was fully booked. Once the food arrived, the pasta tasted pretty bland and it wasn't fully hot. It tasted like standard pasta you could eat at home. However the seafood platter, tasted wonderful. The accompaniments were rice, fries, and a salad. There was enough seafood provided and the taste was flavorful.
