Oye Bastardo was kind enough to open early for my Amigas Lunch group this week. They warmly greeted us with Mimosas crafted by Arturo. He blends different infusions with mint, basil and fresh fruits!
The menu is just as much fun to read as it is to order from. Starters include the, oh so amazing, Poison Shrimp. Yup, it's to die for!
Scrumptious beet salad, Diablo potatos, decadent cheese fondue, truffle fries and more. Each dish has plenty for 2-3 people to share.
With each taco order, a stone plate arrives, holding red and green salsas, avocado, pineapple salsa and a spicy habanero. So perfect.
Now the tacos arrive! Everyone was salivating as the smoked essence wafted around our table. Huge portions of smoked pork belly, salmon, pibil and barbacoa filled our table. The talking had stopped. All you could hear was OMG, this is soo good!
Arturo, our incredible cocktail crafter, was busy making us mango mescalitas, margaritas, and serving cold beers.
Our fabulous waitress kept our orders coming with a gracious smile on her face. She even remembered I am not a fan of onions.
Now come the desserts. Maple puff pastry ice cream creation with pecans and bacon! Yes, bacon! Plus a raspberry, orange and ice cream breads followed. Once again our table was brimming with food, wonderful food!
With togo containers in our hands, we all vowed to return to Oye Bastardo and savor more flavors....

The zarandeado, or grilled salmon and portobello tacos had an umami flavor that set them apart from the ordinary.
The salsas and toppings were fresh with subtle complexities to make them also stand out.
To finish, we had the garlic cauliflower tacos, which were a crispy, flavorful, and nice alternative to typical taco selections.
The staff were attentive and friendly and chatted with Alberto, one the Bastard owners. The mixologist behind the bar offered a yet to be named cocktail, which I’m calling Xantus’ Agrio Bastardo, which is a Sour worthy of a visit by itself. It’s not on the menu but ask...

It may be a simple 2-3 block walk from the downtown square area, but well worth it.
A great menu full of interesting variations on traditional Mexican food. Not your typical taco's. And you will not be paying tourist prices for great food.
A cool place to eat downtown, but a couple of blocks away from the madness of the old square area. Oye Bastardo offers a different take on traditional tacos, a complex mix of flavors deliver an excellent dining experience. The tacos are substantial, so be prepared to pace yourself. 😊 Prices are very reasonable, especially given the taco construction. Beer and liquor also. Highly...
